PT’s Kness leader at PIAA golf tournament
Mia Kness, a junior at Peters Township, shot a one-over par 73 to take lead at the midpoint in the PIAA Girls Class AAA Golf Championships Monday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
Kness shot 36 on the front nine and 37 on the back to take a one-stroke lead over Brynne Walker of Radnor. Kness was the only Washington-Greene golfer in the top 10.
Three golfers – Marissa Balish of Hampton, Lauren Freyvogel of Pine Richland and Maddie Sage of Owen J. Roberts were tied for third after shooting 5-over 77s.
Kness finished fifth in the West Region to clinch her third consecutive trip to Heritage Hills. She tied for sixth place at the WPIAL Championships two weeks ago at Rolling Hills Country Club.
In Class AAA boys, Zack Ford of Meadville was in a three-way tie with Geoff Rice of Great Valley and Patrick Kelly of Cathedral Prep after shooting 2-over 73.
Peters Township golfers had a tough afternoon. Alec Stopperich sat in 14th place after a 7-over par and is five strokes back. Connor Schmidt, who won the West Region last week, was in 31st place after a 12-over par. And Tanner Johnson was 27th after a 10-over 81.
In Class AA boys, Nate Menon of Wyomissing took a three-stroke lead over William Mirams of Notre Dame after shooting even-par 71. Cody Dobbin of Burgettstown was tied for 11th after an 80, Mike Kondratick (82) is tied for 18th, Luke Dziak (84) was in a tie for 26th place, Austin Lis (85) was tied for 29th and Liam Shea of Carmichaels (86) was 31st.
In Class AA girls, Olivia Zambruno of Greensburg Central Catholic held a two-stroke lead over Marissa Kirkwood.
