Two local schools discovered Monday that a section title only does so much for a team’s seeding in the WPIAL volleyball playoffs.

Chartiers-Houston and Fort Cherry, which shared the Section 6-A championship, are the lowest seeded section champions in the Class A playoffs and both will open the postseason at Canon-McMillan.

The Bucs received the ninth seed and will face No. 8 Vincentian, which finished third in Section 2-A, Thursday at 6 p.m., and the tenth-seeded Rangers will face No. 7 Frazier at 8 p.m.

The WPIAL championships will be held Sat., Nov. 7 at Baldwin High School. A local team has not reached the WPIAL semifinals since 2001, when Bentworth was defeated by Avonworth, and a local school has never won a WPIAL girls volleyball championship.

Also in Class A, Carmichaels will face Bentworth tonight in a preliminary round match at Peters Township (6:30 p.m.) with the winner earning the No. 14 seed and the right to face fourth-seeded Shenango Thursday night. Beth-Center, which finished third in Section 6-A, will play a preliminary round match tonight at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart tonight against Western Beaver at 6 p.m. The winner will face top-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic Thursday at Norwin. No. 11 Jefferson-Morgan will travel to Chartiers Valley Thursday to face sixth-seeded OLSH in a first round match at 7:30 p.m.

In Class AA, Waynesburg has a preliminary round match against Mohawk at OLSH today at 4:30 p.m. to determine the No. 15 seed and who will face second-seeded West Shamokin Thursday at Norwin. South Fayette, which shared the Section 6-AA championship with rival Seton-La Salle, earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 12 Brownsville Wednesday at Baldwin (6 p.m.).

Trinity earned the No. 16 seed and will travel to top-seeded Baldwin Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Canon-McMillan, which took third place in Section 2-AAA and earned the 15th seed, has a first-round match at No. 2 North Allegheny (7:30 p.m.). Peters Township received the 12th seed and will face No. 5 Bethel Park Wednesday at 6 p.m.
