California wins wild shootout over Avella

K.C. Zajicek had one of the most prolific games in the history of California High School football.

The senior spearheaded an offensive shootout with eight touchdowns as California outscored Avella, 61-42, in the Tri-County South Conference.

Zajicek’s performance aided 14 first downs and 357 rushing yards by the Trojans (1-1) as he finished with seven rushing touchdowns and returned a kickoff 80 yards at the end of a high-scoring second quarter.

Zajicek scored on runs of 1, 2 and 4 yards in the first half and 53, 5, 8 and 5 yards in the second half.

Avella quarterback Luke Lloyd led the way for the Eagles (0-2), completing 21 of 37 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Lloyd also contributed two rushing touchdowns. The Eagles’ Tyler Fraysier caught 10 passes for 196 yards and Steven Miller hauled in seven receptions for 80 yards, combining for four touchdowns.
