Former Pitt basketball player Brookin dies

Rod Brookin, a former guard on Pitt’s basketball team, died Wednesday morning in Pittsburgh. He was 47.

Brookin scored 1,047 career points while playing on Panthers teams (1986-90) that captured Big East Conference regular-season titles in 1986-87 and 1987-88.

Brookin was hired as the boys varsity basketball coach at Burgettstown High School in 2000 and spent two seasons there before leaving for a job at CCAC South. He also was an assistant coach under Reggie Wells at South Park. He served as an assistant coach at Seton Catholic High School in Phoenix, Ariz., and at Quaker Valley High School.
