Day takes big lead into final day at BMW Championship
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Jason Day shot a 2-under 69 at the BMW Championship, good enough to take a six-stroke lead into the final round.
Instead of running away from the field, as he had in the first two rounds after shooting 61 and 63, Day spent most of Saturday running in place. He made his first bogey in 20 holes at the sixth, then piled on three more to offset a half-dozen birdies. He wasn’t alone struggling to stay consistent in cool, windy conditions at Conway Farms.
While the pack pursuing the FedEx Cup leader got no closer, there was a reshuffling of names. Scott Piercy moved up four spots from sixth into second place alongside rookie Daniel Berger. World No.1 Rory McIlroy climbed from ninth to claim fourth place by himself.
Brendon Todd, playing alongside Day and Berger in the lead group, made the biggest slide, falling from second to 18th.
Europe up on U.S. at suspended Solheim Cup: Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr earned a point for the United States to trail Europe 8-5 in the Solheim Cup before the other fourball matches were suspended Saturday due to bad light.
The American duo defeated Spanish pair Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Munoz 3 and 2 to reduce the Europeans’ lead after a good morning for the home team.
“We knew where we stood going into the afternoon. It didn’t really change our mindset,” Thompson said. “We knew we made a good team with the matches that we’ve played together. We just went out and played aggressive.”
The United States held a slight advantage in the three remaining fourball matches to be resumed Sunday morning at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club.
Rookie Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome were 1 up after 15 holes against England’s Charley Hull and Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, who missed a birdie to match Lee on the last hole played before darkness intervened.
Stacy Lewis rediscovered her form as she and Gerina Piller were 1 up over Germany’s Caroline Masson and Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall after 16 holes played.
Hurst grabs Symetra lead: Vicky Hurst shot a second-round 66 to grab a 5-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Symetra Tour’s Garden City Charity Classic at Garden City, Kansas.
Hurst entered the day in a four-way tie for first place, but her 66 lifted her to a commanding lead over Jordan Britt, who shot a 69 Saturday.
Waynesburg High School graduate Rachel Rohanna shot a 1-over par 73 and is now 4-over par for the tournament, putting her in a tie for 46th place.
