EDINBORO – California University’s football team used a familiar formula Saturday afternoon to capture a 37-30 win over Edinboro in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.
Cal built a large lead, 30-9, but was outscored 21-7 in the second half. Cal had the same scenario play out last week in a victory over Shippensburg.
The win moved Cal (1-0, 3-1) into a four-way tie for first place in the conference. Edinboro lost its fourth consecutive game.
James Harris completed 22 of 30 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns for Cal. Garry Brown, who missed last week’s game because of a sprained ankle, returned to catch 10 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown that made it 23-9.
Tailback James Franklin carried 31 times for 196 and scored the game’s first two touchdowns on a pair of one-yard runs. He also scored on a five-yard run that stretched the lead to 37-23 in the fourth quarter.
Luke Smorey caught a 29-yard scoring pass from Harris to give the Vulcans their biggest lead, 30-9, with 6:39 left in the third quarter.
Jake Sisson had similar stats to his counterpart, Harris, completing 22 of 32 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns. Darrin Massey caught three of those scoring passes, the third one cutting the Cal lead to 30-23.
Alex Caratelli had six receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown for Edinboro.
