BERWICK – George Curry, the winningest high school football coach in Pennsylvania history, has died. He’d been batting Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Berwick School District Superintendent Wayne Brookhart said Curry died Friday at age 71. He wasn’t told the cause of death.

Curry had 455 victories and coached the Berwick Bulldogs High School football team for decades.

He led the Bulldogs to six PIAA class AAA championships and was twice named USA Today’s High School Coach of the Year, in 1992 and 1995.

Brookhart said Curry leaves a great legacy, and his death is a tremendous loss for the community.
