Softball: West Greene beats defending WPIAL Class AA champion
West Greene scored six runs in the first two innings and defeated defending WPIAL Class AA champion Deer Lakes 7-6 Saturday at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Winning pitcher Madison Renner helped her cause by going 2-for-4 with a double and an inside-the-park home run and four RBI. Madison Lampe drove in a run with a double as the Pioneers outhit the Lancers 12-7.
Deer Lakes (1-1) trailed 6-4 after two innings and West Greene (4-1) tacked on a key run in the fourth for a three-run cushion. The Pioneers left the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh innings, and Deer Lakes pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh to close to within 7-6 but Renner got the final out with the Lancers stranding the potential tying run at third base.
Maria Taliani had a triple for Deer Lakes.
• Belle Vernon scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Ligonier Valley 6-3 in a non-section game.
The win was the fourth in a row for Belle Vernon (4-2). Katelin Legazza had a double and drove in two runs to lead the Leopards at the plate. Winning pitcher Bailey Parshall had a double and an RBI. Parshall struck out eight and did not issue a walk. She did give up nine hits, including a double and triple to losing pitcher Lexie Petrof.
Ligonier Valley is 2-1.
