Baseball: Maimone, Bentworth walk off with win
Jake Maimone’s walk-off single with the bases loaded gave Bentworth a 4-3 win over West Greene in the bottom of the eighth inning of a Section 1-A home game Friday.
The Bearcats (1-0, 3-2) led 3-2 entering the top of the seventh when West Greene’s Patrick Brady drove in Tyler Baker. Losing pitcher Dillon Sheilds struck out seven for the Pioneers (0-1, 1-3).
Four of Bentworth’s 11 hits were doubles.
• Luke Gapinski and Adam Pace each drove in three runs with three hits to help Our Lady of the Sacred Heart defeat Avella 14-0 in a five-inning Section 5-A game.
Scott Symons was the winning pitcher for OLSH (1-0, 6-1) despiting walking five. The Eagles (0-1, 1-5) committed eight errors.
• Hudson Novak pitched a one-hit shutout and hit two home runs as Laurel Highlands remained undefeated in Section 4-AAA with a 10-0 six-inning victory over visiting Ringgold.
Novak took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but lost it when Ringgold’s Anthony Pampena singled with one out. Novak issued two walks and struck out five as Laurel Highlands improved to 3-0 in the section and 5-1 overall.
The Mustangs scored four runs in the first inning. Two of the runs came Novak’s first home run of the day. He led off the fifth inning with a solo homer to give LH a 5-0 lead.
Ringgold fell to 1-2 in the section and 2-4 overall.
