Softball: Parshall strikes out 18 as Belle Vernon wins rematch of WPIAL final

In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class AAA championship game, Belle Vernon’s Bailey Parshall and Yough’s Macy Mularski hooked up in a pitchers’ duel Monday until Hanna Legazza’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Belle Vernon a 1-0 victory over the previously undefeated Cougars.

Both pitchers struck out 18 batters. Parshall tossed a five-hitter and issued only one walk. Mularski gave up four hits and three walks. Two of Belle Vernon’s hits were by Parshall. Kourtney also had two singles for the Leopards.

Yough’s Cassidy Pearce had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double. Belle Vernon committed six errors but Parshall continually pitched out of jams as Yough left 14 runners on base.

Belle Vernon improved to 9-4. Yough is 9-1.

• McGuffey pounded out 17 hits and had three players with the hits apiece to hand Bentworth its first loss in Section 2-AA by a 10-2 score.

Rachel Kleinhans had a bases-loaded triple and Emily Irey a two-run double for the Highlanders (4-0, 6-0). Meghan Shultz went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs, winning pitcher Moriah McGuier went 3-for-4 with a double and Emily Vinski went 3-for-4. Brin Hunter hit a solo home run. Balicia Hambleton went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Bentworth fell to 8-2, 5-1 in the section.

• Canon-McMillan rallied from a 3-0 deficit to grab a 7-4 victory over Waynesburg in a non-section game.

Katelyn Greaves had two hits and three RBI and Kayla Hopkins went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Big Macs (8-1). Linda Rush doubled, scored a run and had an RBI.

Rachel Elsenheimer went 2-for-4 and scored twice and Taylor Staley had two hits and a run for the Raiders (3-8).

• Jefferson-Morgan took advantage of 12 walks in a 13-0 five inning victory over Fort Cherry in Section 1-A.

Autumn Tedrow struck out 12 and walked three for the Rockets (4-1, 6-4). Kayla Yorko and Brooke diamond each had a double and two RBI.

Fort Cherry fell to 0-6, 0-3 in the section.

• Kylie Gosliak went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI to help Ringgold to a 21-4, five-inning victory over Allderdice in a non-section game.

The Rams (4-4) pounded out 14 hit. Lauren Gohacky had a double, triple and three RBI; Taylor Mendcino homered and drove in three; Maddie Beckinger drove in four runs and Johnna Mocniak went 3-for-3 with a double.

Allderdice (2-7) committed five errors.

• Abby Gustovich threw a three-hit shutout as Beth-Center won its first game of the season, 3-0, over visiting Washington in Section 2-AA.

Beth-Center (1-5, 1-6) scored the only run it would need in the third inning on an RBI-single by MacKenzie Crile and tacked on two runs in the sixth, scoring on a passed ball and an error.

Gustovich struck out 13 and issued only one walk. Alexis Strawn had a double for Washington (0-6, 0-6). It was the only extra-base hit of the game.

• Madison Renner had three hits, drove in three runs and struck out seven to help West Greene defeat Monessen 10-0 in a non-section game.

McKenna Lampe went 3-for-5 with three runs and Madison Lampe was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI for the Pioneers (11-1). Sophomore Dana Vatakis struck out 11, walked seven and had a double for the Greyhounds (8-3).

• Jeannette scored four runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-1 victory over visiting California in Section 2-A.

Mckaylee Adams drove in Bre Trusler in the third inning for California’s only run of the game. Jeanette (2-2, 2-3) scored five runs over the final three innings. Trusler, Cal’s pitcher, struck out seven batters.

Cal dropped to 1-4 in the section and 1-6 overall.

• In other games, South fayette blanked Buirgettstown, 4-0, in a non-section game and Peters Township edged Mt. Lebanon 1-0 in Section 4-AAAA. Mo details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
