Waynesburg used impressive pitching and solid defense to sweep a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday from Washington & Jefferson, 2-0 and 2-1, at Ross Memorial Park.

In the opener, Waynesburg’s Luke Carter pitched a five-hit shutout. In the second game, the Yellow Jackets’ Derek Whalen threw a five-hit complete game. Over the two games, Waynesburg pitchers issued only two walks and the Yellow Jackets’ defense committed just one error.

Waynesburg’s Matt Bensinger’s run-scoring double in the third inning of the opener was enough offense for Carter, who walked two and struck out five. The Yellow Jackets (8-6, 10-18) added an insurance run in the seventh when Tyler Godwin’s single scored Tyler Reis. Godwin had three of Waynesburg’s seven hits.

In the second game, Waynesburg scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, on a sacrifice fly by Josh Hausler and an RBI-single by Cameron Bernhardt, to forge a 2-0 lead. W&J (8-6, 14-13) closed to within 2-1 in fifth when Adam Larue lofted a sac fly, but Whalen retired W&J’s final seven batters to get his second win of the season.

The teams finish the series with a single game today (4:30 p.m.) at Waynesburg.
