Baseball: Chartiers-Houston holds off Frazier

Cam Hanley, the no. 9 hitter in Chartiers-Houston’s lineup, went 3-for-3 with a triple, drove in three runs and scored twice as the Bucs stayed on the heels of Section 2-AA leader Brownsville with a 10-8 victory over Frazier Wednesday afternoon.

Chartiers-Houston (6-1, 9-2) forged a 10-5 lead after five innings, then had to fight off a comeback attempt by Frazier (0-7, 0-9), which scored three times in the sixth and had two runners on base in the seventh.

T.J. Johnston was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs for C-H. Ryan Mele and Zach Southern each doubled. Southern got the final out of the game to earn a save.

• California, which had its 28-game section winning streak end Monday at Bentworth, rebounded with a 10-0 victory in five innings over visiting Carmichaels in Section 1-A.

The Trojans (5-1, 11-2) scored in all but the second inning. Winning pitcher Louden Conte threw a two-hitter. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Nathaniel Luketich was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI for Cal. Casey Zajicek drove in three runs and Alex Adams doubled.

Carmichaels is 2-3 in section and 6-4 overall.

• Zack Roley hit a three-run homer in Canon-McMillan’s five-run first inning and the Big Macs went on to defeat visiting Mt. Lebanon 7-4 in Section 5-AAAA.

Rohaley finished with four RBI in the game as the Big Macs improved to 3-4 in section and 6-6 overall. Cam Walker was 3-for-3 and Brandon Kline doubled.

Mt. Lebanon fell to 5-2 in section and 7-6 overall.

• Lane Ziker struck out 13 and Eddie Zellie drove in the eventual winning run to lift Beth-Center to a 6-5 win over Washington in a Section 2-AA game.

The Bulldogs (2-4, 2-5) had runners on second and third with one out when Zellie hit a hard grounder to third, leading to a rundown between second and third, allowing the Bulldogs to break the tie.

Zellie and Hunter Bowen both drove in two runs for Beth-Center. Kurt Adkins had two hits, including a triple, for the Prexies (2-5, 2-6).

• Baldwin scored four unearned runs and Peters Township’s rally fell short as the Highlanders won 4-3 in a Section 5-AAAA game.

The Indians (4-3, 6-6) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh inning, but two runners were called out on what the umpire deemed an illegal slide into second when the Highlanders made a throw to second on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Peters Township got one run, but Baldwin (4-3, 5-5) got Alex Mundy to ground out to end the game.

TJ Dailey took the loss for PT, but struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

• Jake Bissett had 11 strikeouts and Zach Shaffer homered to help Jefferson-Morgan defeat Mapletown, 9-3, in a Section 1-A game.

Shaffer hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning and Gage Clark tripled for the Rockets (2-3, 5-4). Matt Rush had a two-run double in the sixth for the Maples (0-5, 1-7).

• Belle Vernon scored two runs in the sixth inning, but its rally fell short in a 3-2 loss to Uniontown at the DiVirgillo Complex.

The Leopards (5-3, 9-3) got two runs in the sixth on a RBI triple by Jordan Zilka, who went 2-for-4, and a bases-loaded walk by Deven Judy, but Jeremy Saliba got Evan Hannan to lineout to end the inning and Zilka grounded into a double play in the seventh to end the game.

The Red Raiders (4-4, 5-7) scored two runs in the third and one in the sixth.

• Pitchers Kyle Steele and Kyle Kelley combined on a five-hitter as Trinity defeated Moon 6-2 in a non-section game at Consol Energy Park.

Steele gave up one run in five innings for the win and helped his cause by driving in two runs with a single in the Hillers’ four-run fourth inning. Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the second when Tanner Hudak belted a two-run triple.

Trinity improved its record to 4-7. Moon fell to 7-5.

• Winning pitcher Michael Crawford tossed a three-hitter, struck out 13 and scored a run as West Allegheny defeated host McGuffey 3-1 in a Section 3-AAA game.

Crawford held McGuffey (0-4, 2-5) to two singles and Dan Orr’s double. The Highlanders tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning when Orr scored on an error.

West Allegheny scored two runs on a single by Jake Cunningham in the third off Orr, who threw a five-hitter.

• Avonworth needed five innings to knock off Fort Cherry in a Section 1-AA game.

Nate Slenska struck out four, had three doubles a home run and five RBI for Avonworth (7-1, 8-1). Fort Cherry is 5-6, 2-5 in the section.
