Baseball: Vulcans split with PSAC West leader
California split a key PSAC West Division doubleheader at Mercyhurst Friday, losing the opener 11-1 but rebounding to win the second game 6-3.
Mercyhurst continues to lead the division with a 17-5 mark in league play and 30-10 overall record. Cal is 15-7, 22-16. The teams will play a doubleheader today (1 p.m.) at Consol Energy Park.
Chris Gonzalez homered twice during Mercyhurst’s 10-run third inning as the Lakers cruised to victory in the opener. Colin McKee was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 8-1 by giving up only one run in six innings. He struck out seven.
Mick Fennell led the Cal offense, going 3-for-4. Austin Logan was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Morrison stayed hot at the plate in the second game, batting 3-for-3 with a triple, run and two RBI, but sloppy play on defense helped Cal earn the doubleheader split.
Cal forged a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Joe Yourgal had a two-run single. Mercyhurst pulled even at 3-3 in the fourth as Morrison hit a two-run triple before scoring on a groundout.
The Vulcans broke the tie in the sixth, pushing across two runs on an error and another on a wild pitch.
Winning pitcher Carter Krick went the distance, allowing six hits. He struck out five.
