Baseball: W&J takes 2 from Saint Vincent

Washington & Jefferson moved back into fourth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference standings by sweeping a doubleheader Saturday from visiting Saint Vincent 7-1 and 7-2, at Ross Memorial Park while Waynesburg was swept by Thiel.

Trevor Kerr pitched a three-hitter and did not walk a batter in the opener. W&J (10-7, 16-14) scored a run in the first inning and tacked on five more in the second. Nick Vento had an RBI in each of the first two innings and Frank Fortunato had a two-run single.

In the second game, three W&J pitchers combined on a seven-hitter and Dan Trettel drove in two runs. Winning pitcher Bryce Schnatterly was the winning pitcher and was followed only the mound by Matt Heslin and Tim Mulvey. W&J broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth.

Derek Helbing was 3-for-4 with two runs.

Saint Vincent is 9-10, 16-16.

• Waynesburg dropped to fifth place in the PAC after losing twice at Thiel, 4-0 and 9-6.

Third-place Thiel (12-4, 23-9) received a two-hit shutout from Matt Elko in the opener and then held off a late Waynesburg charge in the second game. Thiel led 7-2 before Waynesburg (9-8, 11-20) drew to within a run with a four-run sixth. The Tomcats scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Tyler Reis and Cameron Barnhardt each doubled for the Yellow Jackets.

• California had a rough day at Consol Energy Park, dropping a doubleheader to PSAC West Division leader Mercyhurst, 12-2 and 19-3.

Mercyhurst (19-5, 32-10) had 37 hits, including five home runs, in the doubleheader. Hank Morrison homered in each game for the Lakers. Garrett Brooks hit a home run for Cal (15-9, 22-18) in the opener.
