Softball: McGuffey, Carmichaels win in 2-AA
Brin Hunter hit a solo homer and Meghan Shultz drove in three as McGuffey defeated Charleroi 8-2 Wednesday in a Section 2-AA game at McGuffey Community Park.
Hunter drove in a pair and Moriah McGuier earned a win with seven strikeouts for the Highlanders (9-0, 11-0), who are one of two undefeated teams in Class AA.
Megan Riley went 3-for-3 for the Cougars (2-7, 4-7).
• Gina Ranieri raced home from third base on winning pitcher Laura Walker’s infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Carmichaels a 4-3 victory over Bentworth in Section 2-AA.
Bentworth (7-2, 10-3) erased an early 3-0 deficit and tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the top of the seventh. Ranieri led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, was bunted to second and move to third on Megan Walker’s infield single. Laura Walker then rolled a grounder that was bobbled and the throw to first base wasn’t in time to get Walker for the final out of the inning.
Megan Walker and Natalie McNett each doubled for the Mikes (6-3, 7-6). Leah Lindley doubled for Bentworth.
• A trio of West Greene players drove in three runs and Bailey Bennington pitched a three-inning no-hitter as the Pioneers clinched a playoff spot with a 20-0 win over Fort Cherry in Section 1-A.
Savannah Pettit, Brianna Goodwin and Madison Renner all drovein three runs for the Pioneers (7-0, 15-1), who benefitted from nine walks and six hit batters.
• Samantha Holtz scored on Taylor Mendicino’s groundout in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie and help Ringgold to a 6-5 victory over visiting McKeesport in Section 3-AAA.
McKeesport (1-9, 2-11), which hit two home runs, had scored four times in the fifth inning to force a 5-5 tie. Hotz, however, doubled in the sixth, advanced on a single by bailey Cooper and scored on the groundout as Ringgold improved to 3-6 in section and 5-8 overall.
Winning pitcher Jordan Sinz struck out seven.
• Chartiers-Houston scored five runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a 10-0 victory over host Mapletown in Section 1-A.
Kayla Alderson hit a solo home run for C-H (5-2, 8-5), which moved into a tie for second place in the section with Jefferson-Morgan. The Bucs host the Rockets this afternoon.
Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich threw a three-hitter that included two singles by Taylor Vanata. Mapletown is 2-4, 3-8.
