Baseball: Ringgold deals Uniontown costly setback

Winning pitcher Ryan Varley and reliever Bo Haines combined on a five-hitter as Ringgold hurt Uniontown’s playoff chances by defeating the Red Raiders 2-1 Saturday in Section 4-AAA.

The loss dropped fourth-place Uniontown (5-6, 6-9) to 1½ games behind third-place South Park. The top three teams in each section advance to the WPIAL playoffs.

Ringgold (3-8, 4-11) broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning when Connor Garry hit a double to right field that scored Chase Angotti.

The one-run lead was all Varley and Haines needed. Varley struck out seven and gave up only one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings. Haines got the final two outs for a save.

• Washington got its offense going, generating 11 hits in a 7-3 victory over Shady Side Academy in a non-section game played at Consol Energy Park.

Wash High (4-9) had 10 singles, the only extra-base hit being a double by Isaiah Perry, who was 2-for-3 with a three runs. Jordan West also had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Starting pitcher Steven Shallcross was the winner SSA (7-7) was held to four hits.

• A 10-run explosion in the fifth inning gave Chartiers-Houston a 15-5 non-section win in five innings over McGuffey Saturday at the Allison Elementary field.

Chartiers-Houston (12-3) improved its record to 9-0 at home and needed the 10-run fifth after McGuffey (3-10) scored four runs in the top of the inning to force a 5-5 tie.

The Bucs had 14 hits – all singles. Matt Whitfield, Ethan Shober and Cam Hanley each had two hits and two RBI. Andrew Clark and Destin Wheeler each had two singles, and Ryan Mele and Zach Southern both drove in two runs.

T.J. Johnston was the winning pitcher in relief. Adam Blachatczyk had a double and run-scoring single for McGuffey.

Chartiers-Houston, which is in second place in Section 2-AA with an 8-2 record, puts its undefeated home mark on the line Monday when it plays section-leader Brownsville.

• Designated hitter Blake Smith singled down the right-field line in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Peters Township a 5-4 victory over Mount Lebanon in a Section 5-AAAA game late Friday night.

T.J. Dailey struck out 6 in 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief for Peters Township (7-3, 9-6), which is one game behind section leader Bethel Park with two section games remaining.

With two outs in the eighth, Alex Monday got on by fielder’s choice and Tor Sehnert was intentionally walked. Smith’s single scored Monday.

Sehnert, Eric Riotto and Brady Cararie each had a double for the Indians. Nate Bayer doubled for Mount Lebanon (7-4, 9-8).
