Evansville completes sweep of Wild Things
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Wild Things 6-2 Thursday night at Bosse Field and complete a three-game series sweep.
The loss drops Washington’s record to 32-34. It’s the first time all season the Wild Things have been two games under .500.
Evansville scored all five of the first-inning runs after two outs. Nik Balog, Chris Breen and Jeff Gardner hit consecutive run-scoring doubles off Washington starting pitcher Chase Cunningham (3-8).
Wild Things catcher Kyle Pollock, who played college baseball at Evansville, led off the second inning with his second home run of the season, and David Popkins doubled home Ricky Rodriguez in the third to cut the Otters’ lead to 5-2.
Breen had a run-scoring single in the fifth that made it 6-2.
The Wild Things loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but did not score as Evansville reliever Ken Frosch entered the game and got of the jam with a popout, flyout and strikeout.
Washington begins a three-game series Friday night in O’Fallon, Mo., against the River City Rascals.
