Like a candle, Roman lights the way for Mexico
Jose Roman did a little bit of everything in this game.
The talented shortstop from Los Mochis, Mexico, made an outstanding catch in foul territory of a ball that seemed headed for the warning track behind third base. He made a nice play on a key doubleplay in the seventh inning and had a pair of two-run doubles.
It all added up to Roman sparking Mexico to an 11-7 victory over Chesterfield, Va., in an elimination game in the Pony League World Series at Lew Hays Pony Field Tuesday.
“We trust him as a hitter,” said Mexico manager Eduardo Felix through a translator. “He’s a very consistent hitter.”
Roman ended up 2-for-3 with two runs and the four RBI. Jair Felix had a two-run home run and Rigoberto Borbolla a solo shot in back-to-back plate appearances.
Mexico scored in all but one inning, led 8-3 and 10-6 during the game.
The two teams combined for 10 stolen bases.
The loss overshadowed an outstanding tournament by Chesterfield center fielder Jay Woolfolk, who went 8-for-10 in the world series. His .800 averaged tied the effort of Eric Carlisle of Pasadena, Texas, in the 1990 Pony World Series. The record was once held by former Major League Baseball player Steve Kemp, who played for Arcadia, Calif., when the team finished second in the 1969 series.
“He’s only 13 and a young 13. His birthday isn’t until Nov. 24,” said Chesterfield manager Ashley Arrowood. “He’s really a great athlete and had an outstanding performance in this tournament.”
Woolfolk also stole two bases, giving him six for the series. Pitcher Tyler Garner hit two home runs and drove in four runs, and Ethan Iannuzzi went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Bay County, Mich., 5, Laredo, Texas, 1
Anthony Bernard, nursing a thumb injury, came to bat in bottom of the sixth inning and gave Bay County, Mich., a pinch-hit to remember.
Bernard crushed a three-run home run over the right field scoreboard to ice a 5-1 victory by Bay County, Mich., over Laredo, Texas, in an elimination game at Lew Hays Pony Field.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” said Bay County manager Larry Kwapiszewski. “I just told him to try to find a pitch he could hit hard.”
Bernard injured the thumb in Monday’s game against Paderborn, Germany. Bernard normally pitches and also plays the corner infield positions but Kwapiszewski felt he couldn’t go against Laredo.
Laredo took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Robbie Coronado in the second inning but the bats fell silent after that. Laredo’s last 17 at bats failed to produce a hit.
“It was hard for us to get going,” said Laredo manager James Christman. “We were coming off a loss (Monday night) that was a big letdown.”
Bay County tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error. A walk and single preceded Bernard’s home run.
