Wild Things rally for sweep
Ricky Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning drove in Andrew Heck with what would be the winning run in a 3-2 victory by the Washington Wild Things over the Windy City ThunderBolts and a sweep of Sunday’s doubleheader in the Frontier League.
Washington won the first game, 6-2.
The wins provide some breathing room for the Wild Things, who now lead third-place Windy City by 1½ games.
Washington entered the top of the seventh trailing 2-1 but Ryne Willard reached on a one-out error, moved to third on a double by Heck and came home on a single by Jimmy Yezzo. Heck took third on the play and came home on the sacrifice fly.
Kolin Stanley had a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh for the save.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Alvaro Gonzalez tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Justin Garcia.
Windy City took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Corey Bass.
In Game 1, Washington busted out early, scoring four runs in the first inning. The big hit was a bases-loaded single by Gonzalez. Two runs scored and a third came in on an error by the outfielder. Washington made it 5-1 on an RBI single by Heck in the fourth and added a sixth run when Kyle Pollock doubled in Gonzalez in the fifth.
Zac Grotz went six innings, allowing two runs and striking out six, to get the victory.
