Dave Popkins homered twice and the Washington Wild Things rallied early and held off Traverse City late to secure a 5-4 victory in a Frontier League game Tuesday.

The win, coupled with a loss by Windy City, gives the Wild Things (38-39) a 2 1/2-game lead for second place in the East Division. Washington has a three-game winning streak.

The Wild Things wiped away a 2-0 lead by Traverse City in the second inning by scoring three in the fourth. David Popkins led off with a home run and Andy Heck and Chris Grayson each had an RBI single.

Popkins led off the fifth with a home run and Grayson doubled in a run in the eighth to make it 5-3.

Traverse City made it 5-4 on a ninth-inning double by Jeff DeBlieux but Dan Davis got the final out for his fifth save.
