Cal women thump Cheyney to stay unbeaten
Shatara Parsons led four California players in double figures with 15 points as the Vulcans remained undefeated with an 83-30 thumping of Cheyney in a PSAC game Saturday at the Convocation Center.
California (3-0, 8-0) held Cheyney (0-3, 0-3) to only 19 percent shooting. The Wolves did not make a three-pointer and converted only six of 19 free throws.
Miki Glenn had 12 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds for Cal, which led 40-17 at halftime. Seairra Barrett also scored 12 points and Lana Doran had 10.
Eleven different Cal players scored at least two points.
Wash & Jeff 64, Saint Vincent 60: Danielle Parker, a sophomore forward from Canonsburg, scored a career-high 19 points as Washington & Jefferson rallied for a 64-60 win at Saint Vincent in a battle of two of the top teams in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Saint Vincent (1-1, 3-3) led by four points in the third quarter and eight points in the third quarter. But W&J (2-0, 4-1) battled back behind Parker and guard Amirah Moore, who scored 13 points and had seven assists. The Presidents trailed 52-48 with less than seven minutes remaining but a layup by Moore gave W&J the lead for good at 54-52. That basket was part of a pivotal 14-1 run by W&J that opened a 62-53 lead.
Babette Sanmartin scored a game-high 20 points for Saint Vincent. Mara Benvenuti had 11 points a game-high 12 rebounds.
Waynesburg 64, Grove City 62: Junior forward Addy Kentzer had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and led a second-half comeback as Waynesburg won at Grove City 64-62 in a PAC game.
Grove City (0-2, 3-3) led 35-24 at halftime and the Wolverines were still up by five points with only 3:22 remaining.
Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, made a pair of free throws that cut the Grove City lead to 58-55 and started Waynesburg’s comeback. The Wolverines responded with two points but Knetzer did it again, converting a three-point play to pull Waynesburg (2-0, 4-2) to within 60-58.
On Waynesburg’s next possession, Knetzer grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a shot that tied the score, and her basket with 52 seconds remaining gave Waynesburg a 62-60 lead.
A jumper by Grove City’s Jackie Stewart tied the score again before Waynesburg’s Kassidy O’Keefe made one of two free throws with 14 seconds to play to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good. Grove City missed a jump shot with six seconds to play and O’Keefe made another free throw to provide the two-point margin of victory.
Haley Delaney and Katie Gehlmann each scored 11 points for Waynesburg, which outscored Grove City 22-8 in the third quarter.
Lexie Arkwright scored a game-high 26 points for Grove City.
Men’s results
Waynesburg 57, Grove City 49: Marcus Wallace scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds as Waynesburg evened its PAC record with a 57-49 victory at Grove City.
Waynesburg (1-1, 2-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak, held Grove City (0-2, 1-4) to only 28 percent shooting for the game. The Yellow Jackets forged a 14-point first-half lead and led 31-21 at halftime.
Six different Waynesburg players scored at least eight points. Only Wallace and Jon Knab, who scored 11 points, reached double figures.
Grove City, which was paced by Cory Huff’s 13 points, closed to within two points in the second half, the time at 45-43 with six minutes remaining. A basket by Knab and a three-pointer by Nick Valentic pushed the Yellow Jackets’ lead back to seven.
Cheyney 84, California 80: Rafiq Marshall and Zahir Stewart each scored 15 points and hot-shooting Cheyney won its first game of the season, 84-80, over California in a PSAC game at the Convocation Center.
Cheyney (1-2, 1-6) won despite a 36-point performance by California (0-3, 2-6) freshman guard Ramon Creighton, who was 11 of 16 from the field and made 10 of 14 free throws.
The game was close throughout and wad tied at 74-74 following a Creighton free throw with 3:48 remaining. A three-pointer by Stewart gave Cheyney, which shot 53 percent, the lead for good at 77-74. Twice Cal pulled to within one point down the stretch, each time on baskets by Tony Richardson, the last time at 82-80 with four seconds left. Marshall then made two free throws to secure the win for Cheyney.
Richardson had 14 points and Robel Teckle scored 10 for Cal, which was only 21 of 34 from the free-throw line.
Saint Vincent 75, Wash & Jeff 56: Austin Ford scored 14 points and Saint Vincent kept Washington & Jefferson winless by beating the Presidents 75-56 in a PAC game in Latrobe.
Saint Vincent (2-0, 5-3) shot 55 percent from the field and had 12 different players score. The Bearcats led 42-28 at halftime and stretched the margin to as amny as 24 points in the second half.
Sean Stinelli led W&J (0-1, 0-6) with 14 points.
