Undefeated CMU women hold off W&J
Jackie Hudepohl scored a game-high 31 points and undefeated Carnegie Mellon held off a comeback by Washington & Jefferson to edge the Presidents 68-66 Tuesday night at Henry Memorial Center.
CMU (7-0), ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division III, raced to a 23-10 lead after one quarter before having to fight off a rally by W&J. The Presidents, who made nine three-point field goals, closed to within 40-31 at halftime and 55-53 after three quarters but couldn’t overcome a huge deficit at the free-throw line. CMU made 17 of 26 free throws compared to W&J’s 3-for-4.
W&J (4-2) had its four-game winning streak snapped.
The Presidents did hold a 53-50 lead late in the third quarter but CMU went on a 9-2 run to put the Tartans in front for good. The Presidents closed to within 67-66 on a layup by Danni Medovich with 2:20 remaining but W&J missed its final four shots from the field.
W&J’s Taylor Cortazzo missed a three-pointer with three seconds left and CMU gained the rebound to secure the win. The Presidents were led by Danielle Parker’s 17 points. She paced four W&J players in double figures. Amirah Moore had 14 points, Medovich 12 and Taley Dunaway came off the bench to score 10.
Lisa Murphy had 17 points and 11 rebounds for CMU.
