Waller’s basket secures C-M’s win

Elliott Waller made a go-ahead basketball with 20 seconds remaining and Carson Miller blocked Southmoreland’s potential game-winning three-point shot at the buzzer Tuesday night as Canon-McMillan held on for a 71-69 road victory in a non-section game.

Canon-McMillan (2-1) trailed by eight points at the end of the first quarter but battled back by using 14 three-point field goals to deal Southmoreland (2-1) its first defeat. The Scotties opened their season by winning a tournament at Mt. Pleasant.

Miller led four Canon-McMillan players in double figures with 19 points, including a team-high five three-pointers. R.J. Bell followed with 13 points, Britton Beachy scored 12 and Jake Davey tossed in 10. The game-winning basket by Waller accounted for his only points of the night.

Brandon Stone led Southmoreland with 21 points and Tony Pisula had 20. It was Pisula’s three-pointer that Miller deflected as time expired.

Zach Leighty also scored in double figures for the Scotties with 11.

Peters Township 91, South Park 65: Peters Township jumped to a 14-point lead after one quarter and rolled to a 91-65 victory over South Park in a non-section game.

Matt Stuck led four players in double figures with 18 points for the 3-0 Indians. Conor Pederson and Mike Cortese each scored 16 points, and Dax Proskina added 14.

Damon Smith led South Park (2-1) with 19 points. Jamar Jenkins chipped in with 15.

Carmichaels 47, West Greene 43: Liam Shea scored a game-high 20 points and Carmichaels held off a fourth quarter rally by West Greene for a 47-43 win in a non-section game.

The Mikes (2-0) led 42-33 after three but were outscored 10-5 in the final quarter.

Craig Weaver scored 12 and Colton Rush added 10 for West Greene (1-1).

South Fayette 50, West Allegheny 41: South Fayette won its season opener, 50-41, over visiting West Allegheny in a non-section game.

Girls results

Washington 61, Frazier 58: Carley Allen scored the game’s final three points – all from the free-throw line – and Washington pulled out a 61-58 victory over host Frazier.

Two free throws by Frazier’s Brooke Poling, who scored a game-high 25 points, tied the score at 58-58 with 18 seconds to play. Allen put Wash High (2-1) ahead for good by making one of two free throws with 10 seconds left and converted two insurance foul shots with three ticks left on the clock. Allen finished the game with a team-high 20 points and was 10-for-12 at the free-throw line.

The game was close throughout as Frazier (1-2) led 26-24 at halftime and Washington pulled ahead after three quarters by a 41-40 margin.

Jahlea Oakley had a double-double for the Little Prexies with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Torri Finley scored 12 points.

Sierra Twigg tallied 20 points for Frazier.

Trinity Christian, W.Va. 48, Mapletown 20: Reagan Sharp scored 21 points to propel Trinity Christian of Morgantown, W.Va., to a 48-20 non-section game.

Emily Saurborn scored 13 for Trinity Christian and Rachel Rosen added 10.

Hannah Dingle’s 10 points paced Mapletown (1-3).

South Fayette 45, Ambridge 39: Maura Castellucia and Jordyn Caputo combined for 21 points as South Fayette downed Ambridge, 45-39, in a non-section game.

Castellucia scored 11 and Caputo 10 for the Lions (3-0).

Anija Walker led Ambridge with 10 points.

Ringgold 36, Brownsville 32: Ashley Briscoe had 12 points and 13 rebounds as Ringgold won its first game of the season, 36-32, over Brownsville in a non-section contest.

Both teams have 1-2 records.
