C-H’s Myers, Hanley combine for 71 points to win in overtime

Halifax Academy of Daytona Beach, Fla., had four players score in double figures Saturday against Chartiers-Houston’s boys basketball team. The Bucs had only four players score but proved that quantity sometimes can beat balanced scoring.

Senior A.J. Myers and junior Cameron Hanley combined for 71 points and Chartiers-Houston outlasted Halifax Academy 76-74 in overtime at the KSA Disney Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Bucs (4-2) won two of three games in Florida.

Myers scored a game-high 40 points – the most he has scored in a regular-season game – to go with 11 rebounds and five steals. Hanley scored 31 points, grabbed nine rebounds and contributed four assists.

Only two other players scored for C-H, and Myers and Hanley had all but two of Chartiers-Houston’s 27 field gtoals.

The game was close throughout as C-H led 41-35 at halftime and 60-59 after three quarters.

LaShaun Wilder led Halifax Academy (2-3) with 20 points, Herbert Pinkney had 14, Terrell Franklin 11 and Christian Williams 10.

West Greene 70, Waynesburg 54: Craig Weaver dominated play inside with 24 points and 18 rebounds as West Greene, sparked by a big first quarter, won at Waynesburg 70-54 in a non-section game Friday night between Greene County rivals.

West Greene (3-1) bounced back from a four-point loss Tuesday at Carmichaels by taking control against Waynesburg from the start, forging a 16-3 lead after one quarter. Waynesburg (0-4) pulled to within 27-19 at halftime but West Greene scored 43 second-half points to get a rare win over the Raiders.

Weaver’s double-double was supported by Nathan Brudnock’s 17 points and 12 from Kolton Rush. The Pioneers went to the free-throw line 40 times, converting 24, and held Waynesburg to only 14 field goals.

Darton McIntire led the Raiders with a game-high 33 points that included 10 of 11 from the free-throw line. Lucas Garber scored 11 points.

Avella 38, Fort Cherry 35: Free-throw shooting had played a part in three consecutive Avella heading into Saturday’s non-section game at Fort Cherry. This time, free-throw shooting was what enabled Avella to end that losing streak.

Grace Lengauer scored a game-high 18 points and the Eagles made 17 of 23 free throws en route to a 38-35 victory.

Fort Cherry (2-2) made four more field goals than Avella (2-3) but the Rangers went to the free-throw line only 11 times, making six.

Avella had to come from behind as the Eagles trailed 16-12 at halftime. Nine different Avella players scored and eight of them made at leats one free throw.

Shannon Relihan scored 10 points to lead Fort Cherry.
