Bentworth wins with pins in final 2 bouts
Trailing Jefferson-Morgan by 10 points entering the final two weight classes Wednesday night, Bentworth knew it had to come with up something dramatic to remain undefeated in Class AA Section 2-A.
The Bearcats’ Ashton Lopez and Dominick Daniels delivered the exciting finish.
Lopez (220 pounds) needed only 88 seconds to win by fall to cut Jefferson-Morgan’s lead to 40-36, and then Daniels, Bentworth’s heavyweight, scored an early second-period pin to give the Bearcats a 42-40 victory.
Bentworth won the final five weight classes, getting a pin by Tristen Labishak at 170 to start the comeback. Two forfeits pulled the Bearcats to within 40-30 and set the stage for the Lopez and Daniels pins.
Jefferson-Morgan got the better of the action in the lightweights as two-time defending state champion Gavin Teasdale (126) started a string of three consecutive falls by the Rockets. His pin was followed by falls from Josh Agnew (132) and Aaron Mylan (138). Justin Maddich fall at 160 was the last bout win for J-M.
Chris Dovshek (106) had a fall for Bentworth in the night’s opening bout.
Burgettstown 57, Washington 9: Four pins by Burgettstown led it to a decisive 57-9 victory over Wash High.
Riley Kemper (220), Austin Bryan (120) and Austin Riffle (138) each posted victories via pins in under a minute, while Ethan Brothers finished off his match in similar fashion nearly six minutes into the match.
Canon-McMillan 72, Chartiers Valley 6: Sophomore Logan Macri joined juniors Matt Oblock and Stefan Richer led the Big Macs over Chartiers Valley, 72-6, after each recorded technical falls.
Macri’s decision, whose match finished 21-6, began keeping the Colts at a distance while Oblock (132) and Richer (160) extended C-M’s already lopsided lead.
Those technical falls accompanied seven pins for the Big Macs, which lost its only match at 220 pounds.
McGuffey 48, Mapletown 24: After two consecutive falls from McGuffey junior Teague Nicolella (138) and sophomore Tyler Maxwell (145) weight class, McGuffey was able to pull away from Mapletown, 48-24.
The two pins for McGuffey came in between two decisions won by freshman Jett Pattison and junior Jeff McConn to give the Highlanders and advantage it would fail to give up for the rest of the match.
Sophomore Tanner Weston was the lone wrestler for Mapletown to pin an opponent.
Luke Shingle, Ed Shingle and Christian Clutter all earned falls for McGuffey.
Chartiers-Houston 60, South Park 12: Chartiers-Houston remained undefeated by defeating visiting South park 60-12 in a Class AA Section 1-A match.
The Bucs (2-0, 2-0) were able to collect five forfeits and combined them with three pins. Matt Cimino (160), R.J. Hall (182) and Trey Lober (heavyweight) each had first-period pins for the Bucs.
South Fayette 65, Carlynton 7: South Fayette jumped out to an early lead on Carlynton after winning its first five contests, as it went on to win 65-7.
Two consecutive forfeits from Carlynton were followed by two pins from the Lions. South Fayette sophomore Joe Bastaroli (195) pinned Carlynton’s Lou Warroll, followed by Lion’s freshman Mark Kurchena’s pin only 54 seconds into the match.
South Fayette’s Colin Dunn (113) also recorded a technical fall over Elias Ward 19-4. It was the Lions lone technical fall recorded.
Belle Vernon 47, Thomas Jefferson 24: Belle Vernon dominated the middle and upper weights en route to a 47-24 victory over Thomas Jefferson in Class AAA Section 2-A.
From 145 pounds through 220, Belle Vernon won four bouts either via fall or technical fall. Tyler Seliga (145) had a technical fall and Brock Godzin (152), Zach Hartman (160) and William Korber (220) each had pins. Logan Seliga (126) had a first-period fall for the Leopards.
Beth-Center 72, West Greene 0: Beth-Center remained undefeated in Class AA Section 2-A by blanking visiting West Greene 72-0.
Only five bouts were contested with B-C winning them all, including three by fall. Maverick Sullenberger (152), Jacob baker (170) and heavyweight David Headlee had the pins for the Bulldogs, who are 2-0 in section competition.
Peters Township 59, Baldwin 18: Peters Township opened its Class AAA Section 2-B schedule with a 59-18 victory at Baldwin.
The Indians were in control from the start as they won the first four weight classes, including a fall by Colton Jeziro (145) in the second bout of the night and a technical fall by Luke Mary (160). Jeff Markert (182) also won with a pin for PT. The Indians’ Jordan Morosz (126) and Shane Park (195) each put together wins by technical fall.
