Boys basketball roundup: Canon-McMillan makes it 3 in a row in Florida
Carson Miller’s basket broke a fourth-quarter tie and gave Canon-McMillan the lead for good, and R.J. Bell made two crucial free throws in the closing seconds as the Big Macs held off St. Mary’s (Mass.), 37-34, Wednesday in a KSA Tournament game at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.
Canon-McMillan went 3-0 in Orlando and improved its record to 5-2 overall.
The Big Macs had to come from behind as they trailed 21-17 at halftime. Miller’s basket broke a 33-33 tie. Following a free throw by St. Mary’s (4-1), Bell sank two free throws to give Canon-McMillan a three-point advantage and the Big Macs held on for the victory.
Bell led C-M in scoring with 12 points and Miller finished with 11.
Jalen Echievarria of St. Mary’s took game scoring honors with 13 points.
Washington 59, Avonworth 47: Using a decisive second quarter, which Wash High outscored Avonworth 19-3 to regain a halftime lead, the Prexies defeated the non-section foe, 59-47.
Leading Wash High (1-0,2-1) was guard Matt Popeck, who had another exceptional night with 30 points. Following up on his performance Tuesday night, which netted a career-high 42 points in the Prexies win over Brownsville, Popeck was the only player to Wash High to connect from behind the arc with three three-pointers
The only other Wash High player to score in double figures was Jacob Swartz with 12 points.
Pacing Avonworth (1-4) was Michael Noethiger’s 22 points. Noethiger was the only player for Antelopes to score in double figures after connecting on five three-pointers.
West Greene 75, Hundred, W.Va., 25: Seniors Kolton Rush and Craig Weaver were only required to play half the game for both of them to outscore the out-of-state oppenent as West Greene cruised to a 75-25 victory over Hundred, W.Va.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter, as Rush tallied 18 points and Weaver scored 16 points in the first half.
West Greene (4-1) held Hundred to under five points in three of the four quarters.
Chartiers Valley 74, Peters Township 66: Ross Wilkerson scored 18 points and had three of Chartiers Valley’s 10 three-point field goals to knock off Peters Township, 74-66, in the KSA Tournament in Disney World.
Coleman Vaughn scored 16 points and Joe Pipilo added 12 on four three-pointers for the Colts.
Mike Cortese led the Indians (5-2) withh 22 points and Conor Pederson scored 18. Dax Ploskina tossed in 14 points on four three-pointers.
The two teams combined for 21 three-point baskets and 50 points in the fourth quarter.
Carmichaels 74, Mapletown 27: Carmichaels (0-1, 4-1) was led by Liam Shea, who led all scorers with 22 points. The only other Mikes’ player to score in double figures was Matt Barrish with 14 points.
Ritchie Catchurek scored a team-high 12 points for Mapletown.
