McGufey stuns Uniontown; PT has 15 three-pointers in win
Colin Chapman scored on a layup with four seconds remaining to give McGuffey a thrilling, 46-44, victory over Uniontown in a Section 3 game in Class 4-A.
It is believed to be the Highlanders’ first win over Uniontown in McGuffey history.
Chapman, who had 10 points, got the ball following a missed free throw by Uniontown and drove in for the winning score. Uniontown’s desperation three-point attempt bounced off the rim and fell away.
Andrew Allender scored 10 points, including eight in the third quarter when McGuffey (2-0, 6-0) outscored Uniontown (0-2, 3-2) 19-16 to cut the Red Raiders’ lead to two points.
Sean Edlis scored 13 points, including six of seven free throws in the fourth quarter, and had six assists. Trent Belleville tossed in eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Lorenzo Oden led all scorers with 18 points and Cam Fitzgerald chipped in with 13 points.
Peters Township 74, Connellsville 52: Sophomore Dax Ploskina scored a career-high 21 points, making seven of Peters Township’s 15 three-point field goals, as the Indians shot down host Connellsville 74-52 in a Class 6-A Section game.
Peters Township (2-0, 6-2) made six of its three-pointers during a 24-point second quarter in which the Indians stretched their lead from 15-9 to 39-22.
Michael Cortese scored 13 points for PT, Conor Pederson had 12 and Matt Thelk 11.
Connellsville (0-2, 2-5) was led by Seth Younkin’s 11 points.
Fort Cherry 61, California 44: Fort Cherry remained undefeated in Section 2-AA with a 61-44 victory at California.
Ryhan Culberson led all scorers with 25 points for the Rangers, who improved to 2-0 in the section and 4-2 overall. Devon Brown followed with 16.
Fort Cherry led 20-17 at halftime before outscoring California (1-1, 6-2) 25-15 in the pivotal third quarter.
For California, John DeFranco had 14 points and Ben Wilson scored 10.
Ringgold 60, West Mifflin 50: Dakota Browning scored a game-high 22 points and Jake Mayer tallied 10 of his 13 points in the pivotal fourth quarter as Ringgold pulled away down the stretch for a 60-50 victory over visiting West Mifflin a Class 5-A Section game.
Ringgold (1-1, 3-4) led 30-20 at halftime but West Mifflin (0-1, 1-5) pulled to within 38-35 after three quarters. The Rams sealed the win by scoring 22 fourth-quarter points as Mayer and Browning combined for 18 of the 22.
Anthony Pampena also scored in double figures for Ringgold as he contributed 16 points.
Darnell Carey and Deyton Hill each scored 10 points for West Mifflin.
Southmoreland 68, Beth-Center 45: Southmoreland had a big first half and cruised to a 68-45 victory over host Beth-Center in Section 4-AAA.
Brandon Stone, the Scotties’ 6-11 center, scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Scotties (2-0, 5-1). Thomas Pisula followed with 21 points as Southmoreland forged a 43-17 lead at halftime.
Stanley Brennan paced Beth-Center (0-2, 2-4) with 13 points.
Chartiers-Houston 75, Carmichaels 40: A.J. Myers had a triple-double to help Chartiers-Houston breeze past Carmichaels 75-40 in a Section 2-AA game.
Myers scored 23 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and had 10 steals for the Bucs (1-0, 5-2), who outscored the Mikes 47-23 through the middle two quarters.
Cam Hanley poured in 23 points for the Bucs and Andrew Clark added 10.
Liam Shea led Carmichaels (0-2, 4-2) with 10 points.
Washington 73, SS Beaver 49: Jacob Swartz scored a game-high 28 points to lead Washington to a 73-49 in a Section 4-AAA game.
Matt Popeck added 12 points for the Prexies (2-0, 3-1), who led 18-3 after one quarter.
Jake McDougal led South Side Beaver (1-1, 2-5) with 16 points.
McKeesport 75, Trinity 69: Terron Taylor and Layton Jordan each scored 22 points to propel McKeesport past Trinity, 75-69, in a Section 1 game in Class 5-A.
Justin Grayson added 11 for the Tigers (2-0, 5-0), who led 34-22 at halftime.
Joey Koroly tossed in a game-high 24 points for the Hiller (1-1, 3-3), who outscored McKeesport, 47-41, over the final two quarters. Jaden Nelson added 10 points.
Keystone Oaks 75, Waynesburg 64: Jake Mellon scored 24 points to power Keystone Oaks past Waynesburg, 75-64, in a Section 3 game in Class 4-A.
Josh Snell added 19 for KO (1-1, 2-5).
Darton McIntire scored a game-high 42 points for the Raiders (0-2, 0-6). Lucas Garber scored 19.
