Girls basketball roundup: Kotchman becomes Trinity’s all-time scoring leader

Sierra Kotchman scored 27 points and became the leading scorer in Trinity High School girls basketball history during a 58-41 victory over Chartiers Valley in the California University Hoopfest Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.

Kotchman passed Karen Donley’s total of 1,282 points when the senior hit a jump shot with 5:55 to play in the second quarter. Kotchman now stands at 1,299 points for her varsity career. Donley played in the late 1980s.

Rachel Lemons scored 14 points and Riley DeRubbo added 12 for the Hillers (7-1), who led 35-22 at halftime.

Mackenzie Wagner led Chartiers Valley (5-3) with 11 points.

Trinity plays Carlynton at 5 p.m. today.

Fairmont 67, Canon-McMillan 55: Erica Bowles scored 23 points and Fairmont (W.Va.) used a strong second quarter to defeat Canon-McMillan 67-55 at the California University Hoopfest at the Convocation Center.

Canon-McMillan’s Cheyenne Trest scored 21 points, including the 1,000th of her career. She now has 1,001 points.

Fairmont (6-2) led 15-14 after one quarter and outscored Canon-McMillan (3-4) 18-8 in the second quarter for an 11-point halftime edge. The Polar bears proected their lead by going to the free-throw line 34 times in the game.

Angela DeLorenza scored 13 points, and Abby Stoller and Anysa Jordan each had 11.

Trest led Canon-McMillan in scoring. Tamara Mathis contributed 12 points for the Big Macs, who will play Obama Academy today at 3 p.m.

Sto-Rox 72, West Greene 70: Sto-Rox outscored West Greene by nine in the final quarter to come away with a 72-70 victory over West Greene in the Bentworth Holiday Tournament.

Lexi Fraze and Jaquanya Young each scored 22 points for the Vikings (3-2), who trailed 38-28 at halftime. Jaynace Hazlip scored 16 and Desiah Miller 10.

Madison Lampe poured in 20 points for the Pioneers (5-1) and McKenna Lampe added 16. Kaitlyn Rizor chipped in with 16 points.

West Greene plays Bentworth at 3 p.m. today.

Mapletown 37, Bentworth 18: Kelsi Smith had a double-double and Mapletown defeated Bentworth 37-18 in the Bearcats’ own tournament.

Mapletown (3-5) held Bentworth to four first-half points while building a 20-point lead.

Kelsi Smith scored a game-high 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Kayla Smith almost had a double-double of her own as she scored nine points and led the Maples on the boards with 15 rebounds.

Mapletown will play Sto-Rox for the tournament title tonight.

Fort Cherry 34, McGuffey 33: Shannon Relihan scored 14 points and Fort Cherry held off a second-half comeback by McGuffey to defeat the host Highlanders 34-33.

Fort Cherry (5-2) led 20-12 at halftime before McGuffey (0-7) began chipping away at the deficit. The Highlanders pulled to within two points in the final minute, but a basket with seven seconds remaining by Fort Cherry made it a four-point advantage. McGuffey then made a three-pointer as time expired.

Emily Durila paced McGuffey with 13 points.

Carlynton 54, Beth-Center 33: Ashleigh Wilson threw in 16 points to pace Carlynton toa 54-33 victory over Beth-Center in the California University Hoopfest.

Diamond Thomas and Jada Lee eached scored 11 points for Carlynton (4-2).

Olivia Greco led Beth-Center (4-2) with 13 points.

Carmichaels 30, Sewickley Academy 26: Kristina Aeschbacher scored 17 points to lead Carmichaels to a 30-26 win over Sewickley Academy in the California High School Tournament.

Carmicheals evened its record at 4-4 while Sewickley Academy, which got eight points from Kendall Lightcap, fell from the undefeated ranks at 4-1.

California 52, Monessen 22: California remained undefeated by cruising to a 52-22 victory over Monessen in the first round of the Trojans’ eight-team tournament.

California (7-0) dominated from the start, building leads of 10-3 after one quarter and 29-3 at halftime.

Bailey Vig led California with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. Jenna Miller scored seven points, grabbed seven rebounds and had six assists.

Qitarah Hardison was Monessen’s leading scorer with 11 points.

California will play South Allegheny 7:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. Monessen drops to the consolation round and will play Jefferson-Morgan at 4:30 p.m.

Brentwood 55, Charleroi 52: Brentwood jumped to a 14-points lead at halftime and held on for a 55-52 victory over Charleroi in the California High School Tournament.

Emma Betz tossed in 16 points for the 6-0 Spartans. Natalie Murrio scored 11 points and Rebecca Dirling chipped in with 10.

Maria Claybaugh paced Charleroi (5-2) with 19 points, Sierra Short poured in 12 points and Kaitlyn Riley 11.
