Beachy reaches 1,000th point in C-M’s win
Britton Beachy scored six points to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau of his career as Canon-McMillan defeated Brownsville, 91-47, in the Trinity Holiday Tournament at Hiller Hall.
The C-M offense was paced from behind the arc with 12 three-point field goals, including four from Jake Davey who had 14 points.
However, the Big Macs (6-2) sharp shooting from deep didn’t translate into success from the free-throw line, where they only went one of 12.
After taking a 37-19 lead into halftime, C-M extended its big lead after 34-point third quarter.
Three other players for the Big Macs – Jason Fowlkes, RJ Bell and Carson Miller – scored in double-digits with 17, 12 and 12, respectively.
C-M will face Trinity in the championship game tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Trinity 84, Chartiers-Houston 65: Despite 25 points from Cam Hanley and 23 points from AJ Myers, Chartiers-Houston fell to host Trinity, 84-65, in its holiday tournament.
Behind 20 points from Jaden Nelson, Trinity (4-3) expanded its lead following halftime after outscoring the Bucs 21-11 in the third quarter.
Joey Koroly and Steven Schultz also scored in double figures for the Hillers with 13 and 11 points.
Hanley and Myers combined for 13 of 19 field goals made by C-H (5-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
McGuffey 43, South Side Beaver 29: Trent Belleville recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and collecting 10 rebounds as McGuffey defeated South Side Beaver, 43-29, in the Avella Tournament to remain undefeated.
McGuffey (7-0) got out to a fast start by outscoring South Side Beaver 23-12 in the first half. The Highlanders would keep the wide margin throughout the second half as neither team could find much offense in third quarter with only five points scored between the two foes.
Scoring a game-high for McGuffey was Colin Chapman, who scored nine of his 18 points from the free-throw line.
South Side Beaver (2-6) was led by Noah Walton’s seven points.
South Allegheny 76, Jefferson-Morgan 42: South Allegheny connected on 14 three-point field goals to defeat Jefferson-Morgan 76-42 in the Bentworth Tournament.
Making seven of those 14 shots from behind the arc was South Allegheny’s Mike Snyir who scored a game-high 23 points.
The balanced attack from South Allegheny (5-4), which scored 35 points in the second quarter, had four players to reaching a double-digit point total. Derick Lockhart finished with 18 points, Luke Johnson scored 14 and Austin Matczak had 11.
Jefferson-Morgan (2-6) was paced by 16 points from Jalen Torres and 11 points from D.L. Garrett.
Burgettstown 76, Freedom 54: Scoring more than 20 points in three of the four quarters, Burgettstown defeated Freedom 76-54 in the Avella Tournament to earn its first win of the season.
Burgettstown (1-5) reached the 70-point mark for the first time this year after a 21-point performance from Robert Dupain and double-doubles from Max Shaw and Cole LaRocka.
LaRocka scored 11 points and collected 11 rebounds while Shaw’s 11 rebounds accompanied his 10 points.
The lone player for Freedom (2-4) to reach double-digits was Santino Guandolo with 13 points.
Fort Cherry 68, Avella 33: Fort Cherry was paced by 20 points a piece from Devon Brown and Ryhan Culberson to defeat tournament host Avella 68-33.
Fort Cherry (5-2) scored its highest season output with the 17 combined field goals from Brown and Culberson, along with an eight-point night from Nick Rogers.
Avella (0-4), who went only three of 13 from the free-throw line, was led by Kevin Painter’s nine points.
California 74, Bentworth 44: Kass Taylor’s 29-point performance paced California as it defeated host Bentworth, 74-44.
In the first 16 minutes, the Trojans built up a substantial lead heading into halftime, 37-17, after a 26-point second quarter.
California (8-2) also received scoring from J.C. Conoway, who had 11 points, and John DeFranco’s 10-point night.
Steven Harner was the lone offensive threat for Bentworth (5-3), scoring 15 of his 23 points from behind the arc.
Ligonier Valley 77, Waynesburg 55: Marrik Paoloa scored a game-high 25 points to send Ligonier Valley to a 77-55 victory over Waynesburg in the Ligonier Valley Holiday Tournament.
Trent Hepner had 18 points and Michael Marinchak 17 for Ligonier Valley (4-1).
Jimmy Straight led the Raiders (1-7) with 17 and Darton McIntire added 14.
Beth-Center 43, Carmichaels 42: Beth-Center held off a last-gasp effort by Carmichaels to come away with a 43-42 victory in the Lions Club Coal Bowl Tournament.
Carmichaels’ Liam Shea sank a basket at the buzzer from a downcourt pass but it was a two-pointer, not three, or the game would have gone to overtime. Shea finished with 16 points for the Mikes (5-3). Matt Barrish added 13.
J.J. Green scored a game-high 22 points for the Bulldogs (4-4), including 11 of the 15 fourth quarter points. He also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. That earned him tournament MVP.
