Girls basketball roundup: Peters Township wins tournament as Marisa is MVP

Tournament MVP Makenna Marisa scored 15 points, as did all-tournament player Ally Zuccharini, as Peters Township won the championship game over host Steelton-Highspire, 74-40, Thursday night in a high school girls basketball game in Harrisburg.

Lillian Young led the Indians (5-3) with 16 points, while Emily Conwick added 13 points in a balanced scoring effort for PT.

Xaria Isom led the Steamrollers (3-3) with 12 points.

Beaver 67, Chartiers-Houston 42: Bella Posset had 19 points and Beaver hit 13 three-pointers, including 10 in the first half, as the Bobcats beat Chartiers-Houston, 67-42, at the LGFC Tournament at Riverside.

Sydney Barney and Paige Zigas both added 16 points for Beaver (6-1).

Alexa Williamson had 19 points and Jala Walker added 10 for the Bucs (6-2).

Burgettstown 42, Avella 28: Kacie Prasko and Maria Castellino had 11 points each as Burgettstown jumped out to a 14-4 lead and cruised to a 42-28 non-section win over Avella.

Avella (4-4) closed the score to 28-22 entering the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils (5-2) went on a 14-6 run to close out the game.

Grace Lengauer had 13 points for the Eagles.

Belle Vernon 73, Laurel Highlands 32: Hot-shooting Belle Vernon made 10 three-point field goals and rolled to a 73-32 victory over Laurel Highlands in the Mustangs’ holiday classic.

Belle Vernon (6-2) will play Slippery Rock today at 2:30 p.m.

Everybody got into the scoring act for Belle Vernon as four players finished in double figures and five different Leopards made a three-pointer. Kelsey Green, Keira Boff and Ashley Russell each scored 13 points to lead Belle Vernon. Taylor Kovatch had 11 points. Russell and Boff led the long-range shooting with three three-pointers apiece.

Kovatch had nine steals and five assists.

Belle Vernon took control of the game early, building leads of 19-7 after one quarter and 44-19 at halftime.

Waynesburg 17, Propel 6: Waynesburg won its first game of the season, defeating Propel Andrew Street 17-6 in the consolation game of the Geibel Catholic tournament.

Waynesburg held Propel (0-8) scorless in the first quarter and to only one field goal in the game. Majesty Alford scored all of propel’s points.

Waynesburg (1-6) was led by Juliann Fisher’s six points while Bre Echegaray scored four points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
