Cal girls, First Love boys win tournaments

Bailey Vig scored 18 points and California had a strong fourth quarter Friday night to defeat Brentwood 49-44 in the championship game of the Trojans’ holiday tournament.

The game was a battle of unbeatens as California improves to 9-0 and Brentwood falls to 7-1.

Cal ended the game on a 18-5 run to wipe away an eight-point deficit.

Jenna Miller scored 12 points for California.

West Greene 62, Washington 41: Kaitlyn Rizor scored 18 points and West Greene outscored Washington in every quarter as the Pioneers cruised to a 62-41 nonsection victory on the Prexies’ home court.

The win improves West Greene to 7-1 while Wash High falls to 3-4.

The Pioneers had three players with double-figure scoring. McKenna Lampe scored 17 points and Savannah Pettit contributed 10. West Greene led 27-17 at halftime and scored 35 second-half points.

Carley Allen was Washington’s leading scorer with 15 points. Torri Finley had 10.

Sewickley Academy 36, Jefferson-Morgan 26: Alyssa Winters scored 13 points to lead Sewickley Academy to a 36-26 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a consolation bracket game at the California High School tournament.

Erin Confortini led Jefferson-Morgan (4-6) with eight points. Sewickley Academy improved its record to 5-2.

South Allegheny 41, Carmichaels 31: Behind 19 points from Alyssa Kennedy, South Allegheny defeated Carmichaels 41-31 in the third-place game at the California High School tournament.

Carmichaels, which received 10 points from Kaitlyn Wilson, had its record dip to 4-6. South Allegheny is 6-2.

Charleroi 63, Monessen 10: Maria Claybaugh scored 19 points and Charleroi cruised to a 63-10 win over Monessen in the consolation bracket of the California High School tournament.

Claybaugh made the all-tournament and helped the Cougars improve their record to 7-2.

First Love 73, Woodrow Wilson 61: First Love Christian Academy pulled away in the fourth quarter and dealt Woodrow Wilson (W.Va.) its first loss of the season, 73-61, in the championship game of the Battel for Armory in Beckley, W.Va.

First Love (8-1) led 40-36 at halftime and 52-49 after three quarters. Woodrow Wilson’s record is 2-1.

Elvis De La Rosa led First Love with 16 points and six steals. Samson George contributed 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fort Cherry 64, McGuffey 63: Fort Cherry dealt McGuffey its first loss of the season, 64-63, in the championship game of the Avella Tournament.

No game details were available at press time.

Fort Cherry’s record is 7-2. McGuffey is 8-1.

Burgettstown 61, Carlynton 59: Garrett Dhans made a reverse layup as time expired to give Burgettstown a 61-59 victory over Carlynton in the third-place game at the Avella tournament.

Burgettstown (2-6) led 24-23 at halftime and 43-36 after three quarters. Carlynton managed to chip away at the deficit and tied the score at 59-59 in the closing seconds on a long-range three-pointer by Chauncey Mickens, who scored 14 points.

Burgettstown inbounded the basketball and called a timeout with 6.7 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils then got the basketball to Ryan Lounder, whose driving shot was short but Dhans grabbed the rebounded and turned and made a game-winning reverse layup as the final second ticked off the clock.

Max Shaw had a big game for Burgettstown with 21 points. Reed Reitter had 10 rebounds and nine points, and Robert Dupain tallied 10 points.

Carlynton’s record is 4-4.

South Side Beaver 53, Avella 44: Jake McDougal scored 27 points and made five three-point field goals to power South Side Beaver to a 53-44 victory over Avella in the consolation bracket of the Eagles’ tournament.

South Side Beaver (4-6) led by only 24-20 at halftime but increased the gap to 13 points with less than five minutes remaining when Avella started a comeback. The Eagles, behind 15 points from Shawn Willard and 11 from Steven Miller, closed to within four points with 50 seconds to play but SSB was bale to secure the win at the free-throw line. The Rams were 13 of 21 at the line compared to Avella’s 5 of 9. Avella had three more field goals than SSB, which made only six two-point shots.

Beaver Falls 73, Monessen 49: Josh Creach and Bryce Strati combined for 48 points and Beaver Falls defeated Monessen 73-49 in the C.J. Betters Tournament at Community College of Beaver County.

Creach scored a game-high 26 points, Strati followed with 22 and Malik Shepherd had 17 for Beaver Falls (3-3), which broke the game open by outscoring Monessen 27-9 in the third quarter.

Cory Fleming made five three-pointers for 15 points and Linden Henderson scored 14 for the Greyhounds (3-4).
