The Washington Wild Things, who begin their Frontier League season in May – the first season under manager Gregg Langbehn – have made several rosters moves.

Washington has placed infielder Sam Mende on the retired list, while second baseman Matt Ford, outfielder Scott Kalamar and pitchers Jon Klein, Jonathan Kountis, Steve Messner and Matt Purnell have been placed on the suspended list.

Kalamar played 209 games over the last three seasons with Washington and Kountis had a 4-7 record with 41 saves in two seasons. Kountis set the Frontier League record with 32 saves in 2014. Purnell also played two years as a relief pitcher, posting an 8-4 record with five saves.

Klein was acquired in a trade with Southern Illinois last year and had an 0-1 record in three starts. Messner was a relief pitcher for Washington in the 2013 and ’15 seasons.

Mende played all four infield positions last season and batted .259 with nine home runs. Ford batted .264 last year, his first in Washington.
