Girls basketball: Jefferson-Morgan wins 1st outright section title
Ally Bogden’s 16 points Tuesday night helped Jefferson-Morgan remain unbeaten in Section 3-A with a 65-46 win over West Greene.
Jamie Lawrence and Erin Confortini added 10 points each for the Rockets (13-0, 19-1), who led 35-20 at the half and clinched their first outright section title.
McKenna Lampe scored 18 points and Madison Lampe had 14 for the Pioneers (9-4, 15-5).
Frazier 70, Carmichaels 41: Frazier kept alive its Section 4-AA title hopes by defeating host Carmichaels 70-41.
The Commodores improved to 8-2 in the section (11-7 overall) and trails second-place Charleroi by a half-game and section-leader Washington by 1 ½ game. Frazier host Charleroi Wednesday night and Washington on Thursday.
Brooke Poling had a big game for Frazier, scoring a game-high 27 points that included 13 field goals. Jovanna Isaac followed with 14 points.
Megan Walker was the leading scorer for Carmichaels (1-10, 4-16) with nine points.
Chartiers-Houston 43, Southmoreland 36: Jala Walker scored 16 points and Chartiers-Houston used some clutch free-throw shooting by Savannah Wheeler to defeat visiting Southmoreland 43-36 in a non-section contest.
Wheeler made 10 of 11 free throws en route to a 16-point performance. Combined with Walker’s 16 points, they were enough for Chartiers-Houston to erase an 11-8 deficit after the first quarter. The Bucs led 24-22 at halftime. C-H led 31-30 after three quarters, then held Southmoreland to only six points in the fourth quarter.
Olivia Porter led Southmoreland (8-12) with 23 points. The Scotties have lost five in a row.
Monessen 48, Mapletown 41: Lashaundria Gillaspie’s 24 points helped Monessen to its first Section 4-A win of the season, a 48-41 victory over Mapletown.
Gillaspie scored eight of her points in the second quarter when Monessen (1-12, 3-17) went on a 17-4 run to take control of the game.
Kayla Smith had 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Abby Antill scored 16 points for the Maples (2-10, 3-15).
