Waynesburg upsets PAC-leader Saint Vincent
D.J. Ritchie scored 19 points and hot-shooting Waynesburg upset Presidents’ Athletic Conference leader Saint Vincent, 73-64, Wednesday night on the Bearcats’ home court.
Waynesburg (7-6, 7-13) shot 54 percent from the field and forced 14 Saint Vincent turnovers. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 11 points in the second half. Waynesburg led 30-28 at halftime, and after falling behind by a point early in the second half, the Yellow Jackets used an 8-0 run to take a 38-31 advantage and never trailed again. Saint Vincent (11-2, 15-5) could get no closer than five points down the stretch.
Ritchie made eight of 13 shots and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. B.J. Durham followed with 17 points and Christian Koroly scored 12 on 6-of-7 shooting.
Pat Jones had a game-high 20 points for Saint Vincent, which leads second-place Thomas More by one game in the loss column.
Waynesburg will play Saturday (2 p.m.) at Washington & Jefferson.
Pitt-Johnstown 71, California 65: Nate Bellhy had his best game as a member of California University men’s team but it wasn’t enough as Pitt-Johnstown defeated the Vulcans 71-65 in the PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.
Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate and Washington & Jefferson transfer, came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points. He made four of eight three-pointers and led Cal on the boards with six rebounds.
A.J. Leahey scored 17 points and led three players in double figures for UPJ (9-6, 13-7), which has won four in a row and is in fourth place in the West.
Nick Miller scored 11 points for Cal (4-12, 7-15), which has lost five in a row. The Vulcans played without forward Richard Smith, who is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.
Geneva 71, Wash & Jeff 41: Jimmy Leichliter scored 30 points, including eight three-pointers and Geneva snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-41 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game.
W&J (1-12, 1-19), which was coming off its first victory of the season Saturday night at Chatham, shot only 26 percent from the field and made just one of 19 three-point shots.
Leichliter made 10 of 16 shots, including eight of 13 from behind the arc. Geneva (3-10, 3-17) led 41-22 at halftime and then held W&J to only five field goals in the second half.
Brian Graytok scored 20 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to lead the Presidents.
California 84, Pitt-Johnstown 66: Five players scored in double figures for California and the Vulcans scored 26 points off turnovers to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 84-66, in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.
Miki Glenn and Seairra Berrett both had 19 points for the Vulcans (13-4, 15-5), who trailed by three points until they outscored UPJ 28-12 in the third quarter. Paige Wright added 14 points, while Shatara Parsons and Emily Suckling both had 12.
Glenn also had seven steals and 11 assists for Cal, which shot 47.8 percent from the field and extended its winning streak to four games.
The Mountain Cats (4-12, 7-15) were led by Jasmine Harper’s 18 points.
Washington & Jefferson 87, Geneva 72: Senior forward Beka Bellhy kept Washington & Jefferson’s hot streak in tact by scoring a game-high 30 points, helping the Presidents defeat Geneva, 87-72, in a PAC game in Beaver Falls.
Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, also had 11 rebounds and for the Presidents (12-1, 17-3), who won their seventh consecutive game and moved one game out of first place. Her sister, Rachel, added 12 points and seven rebounds. Amirah Moore and Taylor Cortazzo also had 12. W&J trailed by one point after allowing 29 second quarter points, but scored 48 points in the second half, including 21 by Beka Bellhy.
Saint Vincent 67, Waynesburg 57: Seven different players scored for Saint Vincent during a 22-point third quarter to propel the Bearcats to a 67-57 home win over Waynesburg in a PAC game.
Susie Ellis had 18 points and Mara Benvenuti chipped in 15 for Saint Vincent (5-8, 10-10), which outscored the Yellow Jackets, 22-5, in the third quarter. The Bearcats were 19 of 28 from the free throw line and won despite allowing 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Waynesburg sophomore forward Addy Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, had 14 of her team-high 18 points in the first half and she led the Yellow Jackets (7-6, 9-11) with 13 rebounds. Kassidy O’Keefe added 13 points and Heather Davis 11 for Waynesburg, which scored just seven points in the first quarter and shot 32.1 percent from the field.
