Fort Cherry headed to playoffs

Shannon Relihan scored 17 points as Fort Cherry wrapped up a playoff spot in Section 3-A with a 31-25 win at Geibel Catholic Thursday night in a high school girls basketball game.

The Rangers (7-7, 9-12) limited the Gators (4-10, 6-14) to two points each in the first and third quarters to lock up at least a tie for fourth place in the section.

Belle Vernon 68, Elizabeth Forward 59: Belle Vernon scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Elizabeth Forward 68-59 in a Section 4-AAA game on the road, clinching a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.

Ashley Russell had a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, and Kelsey Green had 13 points with 11 rebounds for the Leopards (4-8, 6-13).

Charties-Houston 58, Burgettstown 31: Jala Walker scored a game-high 18 points and Chartiers-Houston used a 23-point third quarter to defeat Burgettstown, 58-31, in a Section 3-AA game on the road.

Cassidy Stollar added 10 points for the Bucs (8-4, 16-6), who allowed just 17 points in the first half before outscoring Burgettstown 23-4 in the third quarter.

Kacie Prasko had 15 points for the Blue Devils (2-10, 10-12).

California 64, Monessen 18: Jenna Miller and Bailey Vig combined for 36 points to propel California to a 64-18 win over Monessen in a Section 3-A game on the road.

Miller had 19 points and Vig 17 for the Trojans (12-2), who scored 20 points in the third quarter and allowed just four points in the first half.

South Park 50, Ringgold 33: Allison McGrath scored 18 points and South Park opened the game on a 19-6 run to beat Ringgold, 50-33, in a Section 4-AAA game.

Bailey Cooper scored 11 points and Ashley Briscoe added 10 for Ringgold (8-4, 12-8).

Trinity 68, McGuffey 32: Trinity jumped out to a 29-6 lead after one quarter and Mary Dunn scored 20 points as the Hillers defeated McGuffey, 68-32, in a Section 5-AAA game.

Sierra Kotchman added 15 points and Adison Mamula had a career-high 10 points for the Hillers (10-2, 16-3).

Katie Demi scored 19 points for McGuffey (0-12, 1-20).

Waynesburg 42, Carmichaels 34: Celine Monica had 22 points and Waynesburg overcame failing to score in the first quarter to beat Carmichaels, 42-34, in a Section 4-AA game.

The Raiders (5-7, 9-11) trailed 7-0 after one quarter, but tied the score at 13 at halftime before pulling away. With the win, Waynesburg needs a loss by Beth-Center against Bentworth tonight to secure a playoff berth.

Kaitlyn Wilson scored 10 points for Carmichaels (1-11, 4-17).

Boys basketball

South Fayette 72, Keystone Oaks 69: Rhyan Culberson scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as South Fayette rallied to beat Keystone Oaks, 72-69, in a Section 5-AAA game.

The Lions (9-3, 12-8) trailed by five heading into the fourth quarter but Culberson led South Fayette on a 21-13 run to finish the game. Cam Garland added 20 points and Matt Thomas had 12 for the Lions, who need a win by Montour over West Allegheny Friday to clinch at least a tie for the section title.

Waynesburg 47, Carmichaels 44: Darton McIntire and Mitch Warman combined for 35 points to help Waynseburg hold on for a 47-44 win over Carmichaels in a Section 4-AA game.

McIntire had a game-high 20 points and Warman 15. The Raiders (7-4, 11-7) made 18 of 28 free throws and won despite scoring just five fourth-quarter points.

Liam Shea had 11 points for Carmichaels (2-10, 9-12), which missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
