Myers, C-H clinch postseason berth
Junior guard A.J. Myers and Chartiers-Houston had a memorable and record-setting Friday night as the Bucs clinched a playoff berth with an 87-49 victory over Fort Cherry in the Section 3-AA finale on the Bucs’ home court.
Myers scored a season-high 39 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and Chartiers-Houston (6-8, 12-9) made a school-record 18 three-point field goals. Myers had a school-record eight of the Bucs’ three-point barrage and has scored 1,018 career points. He scored 27 of his 39 points in the first half, when the Bucs built a 48-18 lead.
Eleven different players scored for C-H, which finishes in fourth place in the section. The Bucs entered the night tied for the final playoff berth in the section with Carlynton, which lost 42-41 to Brentwood.
Rob McAnany led Fort Cherry (1-13, 3-18) with 11 points.
Trinity 58, McGuffey 47: Joe Koroly scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the first half and Trinity won its fifth consecutive home game, 58-47, over McGuffey in the Section 5-AAA finale.
The playoff-bound Hillers (8-4, 10-8) forged a 26-15 lead by halftime and secured the win by scoring 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters.
Robert Nelson scored 11 points for Trinity, which finished in third place in the section.
Colin Chapman, with 11 points, was the only player to score in double figures for McGuffey, which was winless in section play.
Beth-Center 47, Bentworth 27: Beth-Center is headed to the playoffs.
The Bulldogs defeated Bentworth, 47-27, Friday night and got help from Section 4-AA rival Brownsville to reach the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.
Beth-Center (5-7, 8-9) needed a win and for Brownsville to defeat Frazier – which it did, 82-68 – to reach the postseason for the first time since 2013.
Washington 60, Burgettstown 30: Nate Swart scored 13 points and Washington doubled up host Burgettstown 60-30 in the Section 3-AA finale.
Washington (12-2, 15-6) took control early as the Prexies led 19-6 after one quarter and 37-11 at halftime. Eleven different players entered the scoring column for Washington. Isaiah Robinson joined Swart in double figures with 10 points.
Bailey Soplinski, the lone senior for Burgettstown (3-11, 6-16), led the Blue Devils in scoring with 10 points.
Belle Vernon 63, Elizabeth Forward 50: Belle Vernon ended Section 4-AAA play on a winning note, defeating host Elizabeth Forward 63-50.
Tommy Rodriguez scored a game-high 20 points and Brennan Morgan had 10 for Belle Vernon (5-9, 8-13). Will Sorton, with 17 points, led three players in double figures for EF (5-9, 7-15).
Steel Valley 61, Ringgold 51: Jamier Fletcher and Dylan Smith combined for 32 points in Steel Valley’s 61-51 victory over Ringgold in a Section 4-AAA game.
Fletcher led the way for the Ironmen (11-3, 15-4) with 20 points. Dylan Smith added 12 and Darian Smith poured in eight.
Anthony Pampena scored 19 points for Ringgold (4-10, 8-12). George Martin and Dakota Browning each scored 10. Ringgold trailed 32-16 at halftime.
Serra 58, Charleroi 55: Nate Andrew scored a game-high 27 points to help Serra upset Charleroi, 58-55, in a non-section game.
Alex Grace and Khalil Smith each scored 10 points for Sera, which won for the fourth time in 21 games.
Sam Miceli tossed in 24 points for the Cougars (15-5), which trailed 30-23 at halftime.
Jefferson-Morgan 64, Mapletown 36: D.L. Garrett scored a career-high 33 points to propel Jefferson-Morgan to a 65-36 victory over Mapletown in a Section 3-A game.
Gage Clark added 14 for the Rockets (4-8, 5-16), who had 12 three-point field goals.
Riley Stewart paced Mapletown (0-12, 0-20) with nine points.
West Greene 45, Avella 33: West Greene used a strong fourth quarter to cap a 45-33 victory over Avella in a Section 3-A game.
Craig Weaver led the Pioneers (8-4, 12-8), who led 17-11 at halftime.
Steve Miller paced Avella (6-6, 9-13) with 11 points.
