Vulcans get big win at Gannon
ERIE – Shatara Parsons had 20 points, eight rebounds and blocked five shots as California University won a key PSAC-West matchup, 83-78, at Gannon in a women’s college basketball game Wednesday night.
The win keeps California (16-4, 19-5) a half-game ahead of IUP (16-5, 19-6) in the PSAC-West standings. Gannon (14-6, 16-8) is third.
Seairra Bennett had a team-high 21 points for California, adding five rebounds and three steals. Mikki Glenn added 18 points and seven assists, while Paige Wright had 10 points.
California trailed, 17-11, after one quarter but grabbed the lead at the half, 34-32. The Vulcans never let Gannon get closer than three points in the fourth quarter, that coming on a Elissa Ellerbrock three-pointer with five minutes remaining that trimmed California’s lead to 64-61.
But Parsons hit a layup and Emily Suckling nailed a three-pointer to push the advantage to 69-61 and California put the game away at the free throw line.
Jennie Thies had 26 points for Gannon, while McKenna Shives added 20 points in the loss.
Washington & Jefferson 77, Westminster 55: Amirah Moore scored 10 of her 12 points in a second half that saw Washington & Jefferson turn a three-point deficit into a blowout Presidents’ Athletic Conference win over Westminster.
After trailing, 33-30, at the half, W&J (15-2, 20-4) went on a 24-9 run in the third quarter to take a 12-point lead into the final period against the Titans (3-14, 3-21).
Beka Bellhy had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Cortazzo added 13 points off the bench. Rachel Bellhy also came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds for the Presidents, who forced 26 turnovers. The Presidents had 17 steals, led by Mya Gordon’s four in just 10 minutes of play.
Rachel Durbin scored 17 points for Westminster, which also got 11 from Kristine Fromknecht.

Gannon 77, California 68: Gannon broke open a game that was tied at halftime and pulled away from California for a 77-68 PSAC-West victory over the Vulcans in a men’s college basketball game.
Kevin Kuteyi scored 27 points and Matthew Dogan came off the bench to add 18 for Gannon (7-14, 8-17).
Nate Bellhy came off the bench to lead the Vulcans (4-17, 7-10) with 18 points. California also got 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots from Richard Smith and 10 points each from Nick Miller and Luka Andjusic.
Westminster 99, Washington & Jefferson 75: Brandon Domenick scored 22 points as Westminster ran away from undermanned Washington & Jefferson, 99-75, in a PAC game.
Jarret Vrabel added 19 points and Charlie Wallander had 17 for Westminster (7-10, 7-17), which outscored the Presidents (1-16, 1-23) 54-39 in the second half.
Brian Lindquist had 22 points, Joe Satira 18, Brian Graytok 17 and Joel Garcia had 13 for the Presidents, who had just six players see time in the game.
