IMPERIAL - Defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Vincentian used a 26-0 run in the second quarter to grab a 40-point halftime lead as it cruised to a 63-13 win over Fort Cherry in a WPIAL Class A first-round playoff game at West Allegheny High School.

The second-seeded Royals (18-4) will play No. 10 Rochester Saturday at a site and time to be determined. The Rangers’ season ended with a 9-14 overall record.

“I knew this was going to be a very, very difficult game,” Fort Cherry head coach Gary Kacsur said. “We knew what to expect, but we were always a step behind.”

Using a quick and suoffiating full-court press to force 32 turnovers, including 22 in the first half, Vincentian was able to forge a 47-7 halftime lead. Fort Cherry trailed 17-4 after the first quarter.

Vincentian was led by Kayla Elliot’s 16 points while Maia Joiner added 12 and Torrie Cash 10 – all in the first half.

Shannon Relihan had nine points for the Rangers, who were 4 of 20 from the field. Vincentian added 14 points in the third quarter while playing its backups and with the mercy rule in effect.

“We knew they were talented and you could see it on tape,” Kacsur said. “They were even better than the tape showed.”
