The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to continue their playoff push without veteran defenseman Ben Lovejoy.

Coach Mike Sullivan said Tuesday that Lovejoy is dealing with a “long-term” upper body injury and is out indefinitely. The 32-year-old Lovejoy left last Saturday’s loss to Tampa Bay midway through the second period following a collision with Lightning forward J.T. Brown.

Sullivan declined to give a timetable for Lovejoy’s possible return. Lovejoy has three goals and six assists in 57 games for the Penguins this season and has a plus/minus of plus-9.

Injured forwards Evgeni Malkin and Nick Bonino practiced on Tuesday but will not be in the lineup when Pittsburgh plays at Boston on Wednesday. Malkin hasn’t played since Feb. 2, while Bonino has been out since Jan. 12.

New Jersey 5, N.Y. Rangers 2: Lee Stempniak scored late in the second period to snap a tie and the New Jersey Devils ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the short-handed New York Rangers.

Carolina 3, Philadelphia 1: Jordan Staal put Carolina ahead and Eric Staal added an insurance score late to lift the Hurricanes over the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1.

Washington-Buffalo trade: Looking to add depth for a playoff run, the Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Mike Weber from the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round pick in the 2017 draft.

At 6-2 and 217 pounds, the defensive-minded Weber gives the NHL-leading Capitals another left-handed shooting player and some insurance on the back end.

The 28-year-old Weber has a goal and four assists and has averaged almost 16 minutes a game for Buffalo this season. He has blocked 666 shots since entering the league in 2007-08.
