Cal women top seed in PSAC West
After celebrating a victory over Edinboro Wednesday night in the regular-season finale, the California University women’s basketball team was rewarded with the top seed in the West Division and a first-round bye for Saturday’s games.
The Vulcans, defending NCAA Division II champions, will host the winner of the game between Edinboro and Mercyhurst in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.
Tipoff is 7 p.m.
West Chester is the top-seeded team in the PSAC East and will face either East Stroudsburg or Bloomsburg Tuesday.
Cal and West Chester were voted the No. 1 teams in their respective divisions for the PSAC preseason basketball polls.
The Vulcans, who won the PSAC championship last season for the first time since 2006, return Miki Glenn, who was voted the tournament’s Outstanding Player last season. Glenn is the conference’s leading scorer at 19 points per game.
West Chester, which went 17-5 in the conference, has won 12 of its last 13 games entering the postseason. The Golden Rams are led by the senior duo of Brittany Sicinski and Dallas Ely. Sicinski and Ely were selected to the preseason all-conference team and led WCU to its first PSAC East title since 2009.
Shippensburg and IUP each finished second in their respective division, earning a bye to the quarterfinals.
In the men’s bracket, Indiana University drew the No. 1 seed in the West and Kutztown the top seed in the East. Both teams have first-round byes.
IUP, last year’s national runner-up, finished second in the PSAC. Brandon Norfleet leads the PSAC in points per game, averaging 22.5 points
Kutztown won the PSAC East Division just three years after finishing in last place. The Golden Bears were eliminated in the first round last season. Kutztown has the second-best scoring offense to complement a defense that allows opponents to shoot just 40.6 percent from the floor this year, second in the league.
Semifinals for men and women will be held Saturday, Feb.5 and the finals are Sunday, Feb.6.
