Moss leads Thomas More over W&J for 10th straight PAC title
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Sydney Moss scored 37 points Saturday afternoon in her final game against league competition and No. 1-ranked Thomas More won its 10th consecutive Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament championship by defeating Washington & Jefferson 93-74 in the title game.
The win gives Thomas More (27-0), the defending NCAA Division III champion, an automatic berth into the national tournament. W&J ends its season with a 22-5 record – three of the losses being to Thomas More. The Presidents must wait until Monday, when the pairings are announced at 2:30 p.m., to find out if they receive an at-large berth to the national tournament.
Moss, a senior forward and two-time Division III Player of the Year, made 13 of 29 shots, grabbed 13 rebounds and had three assists. The PAC’s all-time leading scorer, Moss was named Friday the conference’s Player of the Year.
W&J started strong as sisters Rachel and Beka Bellhy combined for six field goals in the first quarter and the Presidents built a pair of four-point leads. A free throw by Moss with four seconds left in the first quarter tied the score at 17-17, and Thomas More took control of the game by outscoring W&J 30-12 in the second quarter.
Moss scored 11 points in the pivotal quarter.
Thomas More stretched its lead to 72-46 after three quarters.
W&J shot 47 percent from the field compared to Thomas More’s 37 percent, but the Presidents had 21 turnovers to Thomas More’s six. The Saints also outrebounded W&J 47-36 and scored 21 second-chance points.
Rachel Bellhy led four W&J players in double figures with 18 points. Beka Bellhy and Alyssa Riley each finished with 14 points and Amirah Moore had 13. Riley’s total included four three-pointers.
Abby Owings had 18 points and five assists for Thomas More and Madison Temple had 10 points.
