California women lose on buzzer-beater
EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior guard Tyeca Reviere made a game-winning three-point shot from the left wing as time expired to give East Stroudsburg a 74-73 upset of 13th-ranked California in a PSAC women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
It was the first win by East Stroudsburg (3-5, 5-7) over a nationally ranked team since 1995. The Warriors rallied after trailing by six points with three minutes remaining and four points with lessw than 30 seconds to play.
California (6-2, 8-3) has lost back-to-back games for the first time since November of 2013.
The Vulcans’ Shatara Parsons scored off an offensive rebound to cap a 6-0 Cal run that gave the Vulcans a 64-58 lead with 3:19 remaining.
After East Stroudsburg battled back to tie, Cal regained the lead when Seairra Barrett converted two free throws with 45 seconds left, giving the Vulcans a 69-67 advantage. Following an East Stroudsburg turnover, Cal point guard Mike Glenn, who scored a team-high 25 points, made two more free throws to push the Vulcans’ lead to 71-67 with 28 seconds remaining.
East Stroudsburg’s Imani Brown, who came off the bench to score a career-high 28 points, made two free throws before Glenn converted one of two foul shots to put Cal’s lead at 72-69 with 15 seconds to play.
Allison Howard made a driving layup to bring East Stroudsburg to within a point and then Glenn was fouled. Glenn made one of two free throws to make the score 73-71 with 10 seconds left.
Cal had several fouls to give and used them, forcing ESU to inbound the basketball with five seconds left, setting up Reviere’s buzzer-beater. It was Reviere’s only three-point attempt the entire game.
Parsons scored 19 points for California, which made only two of 16 three-point attempts. Morgan Jennings had 11 points and Barrett grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Howard scored 16 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds for East Stroudsburg.
