Peters Twp, Canon-Mac pull out 4-AAAA victories
Nick Valentic had 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half Tuesday night to spark Peters Township’s 77-71 come-from-behind win over Chartiers Valley in a Section 4-AAAA game on the road.
The Indians (3-2, 8-3) trailed 58-54 at the end of the third quarter, but grabbed the lead for good with 1:59 remaining on a three-pointer by Mike Cortese, who had 10 points. Peters Township trailed by 10 points at halftime before scoring 46 points in the second half, extending its winning streak in section play to three games. Clayton Yeates added 18 points for the Indians and Kelson Marisa 15.
Eddie Flohr led Chartiers Valley (3-1, 8-2) with 23 points.
Canon-McMillan 50, Mt. Lebanon 48: Britton Beachy scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half and Canon-McMillan fought off a three-point barrage by visiting Mt. Lebanon to defeat the Blue Devils 50-48 in Section 4-AAAA.
It was the first league win for Canon-McMillan (1-4, 6-6), which used a 15-8 scoring advantage in the second quarter to forge a 25-18 lead at halftime. The Big Macs led by double digits in the third quarter before Mt. Lebanon (2-3, 4-8) mounted a comeback.
The Blue Devils, who made 11 three-pointers, closed to within 49-48 after two three-pointers by Joey Passodelis, but the Big Macs’ Carson Miller converted a free throw that gave C-M a two-point lead. Mt. Lebanon had two chances to launch a potential game-winning shot, but C-M forced a loose ball that the Blue Devils grabbed before calling a timeout. Beachy then intercepted a pass as time expired.
Miller scored 14 points for Canon-McMillan. The Big Macs were 12 of 15 at the free-throw line including 10 of 11 by Beachy. Mt. Lebanon attempted only one free throw.
Waynesburg 87, Frazier 85: Blake Brewer had a steal with under a minute remaining to set up Darton McIntire’s eventual game-winning shot as Waynesburg defeated Frazier 87-85 in a Section 4-AA game.
McIntire, who had 25 points with six rebounds, had a layup off a set play to give the Raiders (2-3, 4-6) the lead with just over 20 seconds remaining and they held on for the win. Mitch Warman had a game-high 33 points with 10 rebounds for Waynesburg, which led by eight points at haltime after a 31-point first quarter, and Brewer added 10 points with six assists.
Mark Dillon had 29 points and Caleb Cox 26 for the Commodores (1-3, 6-5).
Carmichaels 49, Beth-Center 42: Liam Shea and Cody Brown combined for 13 of Carmichaels’ 19-fourth quarter points to hold off a late rally, defeating Beth-Center, 49-42, in a Section 4-AA game.
Brown a team-high 19 points and Shea had 16 for the Mikes (2-2, 6-4), who won despite 21 points by Beth-Center. Bradey McDonnell had 19 points for the Bulldogs (2-2, 5-3).
Monessen 99, West Greene 25: Monessen had four players score in double figures and jumped out to a 50-point halftime lead on its way to a 99-25 win over West Greene in a Section 3-A game at home.
Lavalle Rush scored a game-high 23 poitns with 11 steals and 10 assists for the Greyhounds (4-0, 8-3), who led 63-10 at halftime and allowed just 15 points the rest of the way.
Dwight Moore added 15 points, Jaden Altomore 18 and Justice Rice 13. Monessen made 43 field goals and had 10 players score.
Craig Weaver had 12 points for the Pioneers (2-2, 5-6).
Carlynton 57, Fort Cherry 35: Courtney Mickens led three Carlynton players in double figures with 14 points and the Cougars defeated host Fort Cherry 57-35 in Section 3-AA.
Carlynton (2-2, 6-4) had a strong first half and led 26-10 at halftime. The Cougars, who made eight three-pointers, received 12 points from both Ian Gallagher and Manny Burton.
Most of the scoring for Fort Cherry (0-4, 2-8) was done by Devon Brown and Chad Colussy. Brown led the Rangers with 13 points and Colussy had 10.
Jefferson-Morgan 49, Geibel Catholic 47: D.L. Garrett scored 17 points and Jefferson-Morgan won its first Section 3-A game of the season, 49-47, over visiting Geibel Catholic.
The game was close throughout. Geibel (1-4, 2-8) led 13-12 after one quarter and 26-24 at halftime. Jefferson-Morgan (1-3, 2-9) closed to within 36-35 after three quarters and outscored the Gators 14-11 over the final eight minutes to win its second in a row.
Gage Clark scored 12 points for J-M. Geibel’s Caleb Miller was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points.
The Gators, who have lost six in a row, had a chance to win but missed a three-point shot with one second remaining.
California 105, Mapletown 21: Kass Taylor scored 24 points and host California cruised to a 105-21 victory over winless Mapletown in Section 3-A.
The win keeps California (5-0, 7-3) in first place in the section. All 15 players in uniform for the Trojans scored. Cal led 29-3 after one quarter and 61-12 at halftime.
Jaycee Conaway scored 15 points for Cal, Braden Petrucci scored 14 and Ben Wilson 12. Alex Gennette led Mapletown (0-4, 0-10) with 10 points.
West Allegheny 49, Trinity 48: West Allegheny made 17 of 21 free throws, including several critical shots in the fourth quarter, to close out a Section 5-AAA game against Trinity.
The Indians (4-1, 4-8) got 12 points from Jared Lanni, scored 22-points in the fourth quarter and held Trinity to just three in the first to snap a five-game losing streak. Joey Koroly had 22 points for the Hillers (2-2, 4-6), who made just 11 of 21 attempts from the free throw line.
Seton-La Salle 64, Burgettstown 37: Billy O’Malley scored 22 points as Seton-La Salle defeated Burgettstown, 64-37 in a Section 3-AA game.
The Rebels (4-1, 5-5) held Burgettstown to 18 points in the middle quarters and scored 22 in the second. Jakob Richardson added 11 points for Seton-La Salle and Ryan Lounder led the Blue Devils (1-4, 4-9) with 11.
South Park 64, McGuffey 47: South Park used a 22-point second quarter to grab a 21-point halftime lead on its way to a 64-47 win over in a Section 5-AAA game.
Joey Torris led the Eagles (2-3, 3-7) with 21 points and Torry Hawkins had 11. South Park snapped a two-game losing streak and held McGuffey to just six first-quarter points.
Shaun Sanders had 14 points for the Highlanders (0-4, 5-6).
Bentworth 53, Avella 51: Steven Varner had a game-high 17 points to help Bentworth snap a seven-game losing streak, defeating Avella, 53-51, in overtime of a non-section game on the road.
Levi Jordan added 14 points for the Bearcats (3-8). who outscored the Eagles 4-2 in overtime. Cody Dobbin had 14 points for the Eagles (3-8).
