Defense sparks PT to win
Peters Township’s press defense created turnovers in the second half and Alyssa Konopka scored 11 of her 14 points in the third quarter to help the Indians defeat South Fayette, 54-46, in a non-section game at home.
PennLive.com had both teams ranked in the top five of their respective classifications in the state entering this week and the hype did not disappoint. The two teams were tied 21-21 at halftime before Peters Township (12-1) outscored the Lions 19-6 in the third quarter and held on in the fourth. Makenna Marisa had a game-high 16 points and Madison Kerr added 10 for PT, which extended its winning streak to eight games.
South Fayete (9-2), which made just 12 of 23 free throws, was held to 15 points in the middle quarters and was led by Sam Kosmacki’s 13 points.
Trinity 75, Serra Catholic 38: Sierra Kotchman scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to help Trinity defeat Serra Catholic, 75-38, in a non-section game on the road.
Alayna Cappelli had 19 points and Mary Dunn added 16 for the Hillers (10-2), who scored 41 points in the first half and made 11 of 12 free throws. Serra Catholic (8-3) scored just 14 points in the first half and was led by Olivia D’Andrea’s 10 points.
Boys results
Waynesburg 75, Jefferson-Morgan 44: Darton McIntire scored a game-high 32 points and Waynesburg used a 43-point first half to defeat Jefferson-Morgan 75-44 in a non-section game.
Mitch Warman added 13 points for the Raiders (5-6), who made 15 of 19 free throws. D.L. Garrett led the Rockets (2-11) with 14 points.
Southmoreland 64, McGuffey 45: Brandon Stone, a 6-10 sophomore center, scored 27 points and Southmoreland scored 44 poitns in the second half to defeat McGuffey, 64-45, in a non-section game.
The Scotties (9-5) led by just seven points at halftime before scoring 22 in the third and fourth quarters. Colin Chapman had 13 points and Tim Maxwell 11 for the Highlanders (5-8), who have lost five consecutive games.
