Vulcans win on Jabbie’s buzzer-beater

Point guard Khalill Jabbie’s three-point basket as time expired gave California a 56-54 victory over Gannon in a PSAC West Division game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

California (4-7, 6-10) ended a three-game losing streak. The Vulcans led by five points with five minutes remaining in the slow-paced game but Gannon (2-9, 3-11) took a 54-53 lead with four seconds to play. Isaiah Eisendorf converted two free throws to give Gannon a 54-53 advantage.

Following a 30-second timeout by Cal, Jabbie dribbled upcourt and hit his game-winner.

Richard Smith had a big game for Cal, scoring 18 points and shooting 9 of 11 from the field. Jabbie finished with 13 points.

C.J. Asuncion-Byrd led Gannon with a game-high 19 points that included five three-pointers.

Saint Vincent 89, Wash & Jeff 67: Pat Jones scored 18 points and Saint Vincent remained undefeated in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play with an 89-67 victory over Saint Vincent at Henry Memorial Center.

Saint Vincent (7-0, 11-3) shot 46 percent and committed only seven turnovers. The Bearcats led 42-28 at halftime but didn’t pull away until a 9-0 run in the second half opened a 70-48 advantage.

The loss keeps W&J winless at 0-7 in the PAC and 0-14 overall.

Brian Graytok scored a game-high 20 points for the Presidents. He made eight of nine shots from the field. Brian Lindquist scored 14 points, and Joe Satira and Christian Rohaus each had 10 points.

Thiel 86, Waynesburg 79: Luke Kochka scored 21 points and Thiel used a big advantage at the free-throw line to hold off a late charge by visiting Waynesburg, 86-79, in a PAC game.

Thiel (4-3, 6-8) was 27 of 45 at the free-throw line compared to only 10 of 20 for Waynesburg (2-5, 2-12).

Ultimately, it was a bad start to the game that cost Waynesburg. Thiel forged a 16-2 lead only three minutes into the contest. Waynesburg did battle back and took a 37-33 lead, but Thiel closed the half on a 7-1 run for a 40-38 advantage.

A three-pointer by Waynesburg’s Christan Koroly gave the Yellow Jackets a 71-70 advantage with 4:34 remaining, but Thiel regained the lead and did just enough damage at the free-throw line down the stretch to win. The Tomcats’ final seven points were free throws.

B.J. Durham led Waynesburg with 15 points, Tim Plansinis had 13 and D.J. Ritchie 10. The Yellow Jackets had seven different players make a three-pointer and each player made only one.

Thiel had five players score in double figures.

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 68, Saint Vincent 63: Washington & Jefferson used a big first half by Taylor Cortazzo and strong final 20 minutes from Beka and Rachel Bellhy to hold off visiting Saint Vincent 68-63 in a PAC game.

The game was close throughout with W&J (6-1, 11-3) leading 32-27 at halftime and 54-50 after three quarters.

Cortazzo and Beka Bellhy combined for W&J’s first six points of the fourth quarter to push the Presidents’ lead to double figures. Saint Vincent (2-5, 7-7) twice pulled to within three points, including with 43 seconds to play. The Bearcats then missed a three-pointer before W&J’s Amirah Moore, who scored 11 points, made two free throws to secure the victory.

Cortazzo scored 17 points to lead W&J, which remained one game behind PAC leader Thomas More. Beka Bellhy scored 12 of 14 points in the second half and Rachel Bellhy had 16.

Hannah Carroll led four Saint Vincent players in double figures with 17 points. The Bearcats made 12 three-pointers.

California 64, Gannon 58: Miki Glenn scored a game-high 19 points, Seairra Barrett had a double-double and Emily Suckling made four clutch three-pointers late in the game as California rallied to defeat Gannon 64-58 in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.

California’s win knocked Gannon (9-2, 11-4) out of first place in the division and moved third-place the third-place Vulcans (8-3, 10-4) to within a game of the Golden Knights. Indiana leads the West with a 10-2 mark in the conference.

Gannon led 54-49 with five minutes remaining when Suckling, a reserve guard from Cheltenham, Australia, got hot from long range and shot the Vulcans into the lead. Suckling made four three-pointers in a little more than three minutes, turning the Vulcans’ five-point deficit into a 61-54 lead with 1:54 to play.

The Vulcans led 61-58 with 50 seconds remaining and Glenn sank three free throws down the stretch to secure the win for Cal and end Gannon’s seven-game winning streak.

Barrett scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Suckling scored all of her 12 points in the final five minutes.

Morgan Neighbors scored 18 points for Gannon, which led 30-28 at halftime and 51-45 after three quarters. The Golden Knights’ Jennie Thies had 17 rebounds but Gannon committed 18 turnovers to only nine by Cal.

Waynesburg 74, Thiel 63: Addy Knetzer scored 19 points to lead four Waynesburg players in double figures and the Yellow Jackets broke open a close game with a big run to start the fourth quarter en route to a 74-63 road win over Thiel in a PAC game.

Kentzer finished with a double-double as she grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds, helping the Yellow Jackets (5-2, 7-7) remain in third place in the conference and climb to the .500 mark overall. Waynesburg has won three in a row.

The Yellow Jackets led 23-15 after one quarter but scored only eight points in the second quarter and trailed Thiel (1-6, 1-13) by one point at halftime. Waynesburg led 49-47 after three quarters and then opened the final period with a 15-3 run to build a 64-50 advantage. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Waynesburg’s Katie Gehlmann and Kassidy O’Keefe each scored 12 points and played key roles in the fast start to the fourth quarter. Haley Delaney came off the bench to score all 11 of her points in the first half.

Jaclyn Watkins had 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Thiel.
