The Wheeling Nailers announced the signing of defenseman Nilan Nagy, a Canonsburg native, Friday.

Nagy, who attended Canon-McMillan from 2006-2008, will be one of eight defensemen on the Nailers’ roster and was waived by the Alaska Aces Monday. He played seven games this season with the Aces, where he was a plus-5 and recorded one assist.

The 6-0, 205-pounder spent four seasons at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., registering 22 points and 56 penalty minutes in 125 career games. During his sophomore season in 2013-2013, Nagy had a career-high eight points. He skated in a career-high 37 games for Holy Cross as a senior, majored in economics and was a part of back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in program history. The 24-year-old appeared in six games as a rookie last season for Alaska and scored one goal.

Nagy attended Traverse City High School in Traverse City, Mich., as a senior in 2009-2010, where he played for the Traverse City North Stars of the North American Hockey League, before playing one season for the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League.

He played one year of varsity hockey for Canon-McMillan and was selected to the PIHL Class AAA Southwest All-Star team. He was also a member of the Pittsburgh Predators’ U18 AAA club team.

The Nailers, who are the Pittsburgh Penguins’ ECHL affiliate, return to action tonight, when they play the Toledo Walleye on the road. Their next home game is next Friday against Kalamazoo.
