Riske eliminated at Australian Open

Alison Riske’s run at the Australian Open came to an early end Monday morning.

The McMurray native was eliminated in a first-round match by 12th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, who is the 13th-ranked singles player in the world. Bencic ousted Riske, 6-4, 6-3. in a back-and-forth match. It is the second consecutive year the two faced in the first round in Melbourne.

Riske held the advantage in aces (3) and receiving points won (29), but Bencic held a 32-29 advantage in total points. The 18-year-old Benic is ranked No. 14 in the world. Benic’s best result in a Grand Slam tournament is the quarterfinals at the 2014 U.S. Open.

Riske is ranked No. 74 in the world and she advanced to the finals of the Shenzhen Open in China earlier this month. She reached the third round of the Australian Open in 2014.
