Miceli scores 37 in Charleroi rout; WG wins, 60-59
Junior guard Sam Miceli and senior center John Arnold combined for 64 points Tuesday night as Charleroi overwhelmed host Frazier, 87-67, in Section 4-AA.
The win keeps Charleroi (7-1, 12-3), which has won six of its last seven games, on the heels of section-leader Brownsville. The Cougars trail the Falcons by one game. Frazier fell to 3-5, 8-8.
The game was close for a half as Charleroi led 18-11 after one quarter and 37-29 at halftime. But Miceli, Arnold and Cougars kicked the offense into high gear in the second half, scoring 50 points.
Miceli’s totals came on 13 field goals and 7-of-9 shooting at the free-throw line. Arnold had a double-double as he dominated the low-post play and grabbed 16 rebounds. Brock Shannon also had a big game for Charleroi with 14 points.
Damon Lovis led three Frazier players in double figures with 17 points.
West Greene 60, Beth-Center 59: Nate Brudnock sank both ends of a 1-and-1 with eight seconds remaining to help West Greene secure a 60-59 win over Beth-Center in a Section 3-A game.
Brudnock finished with 13 points for the Pioneers (4-2, 8-6). Craig Weaver had 20, Kolton Rush 13 and Zach McHenry 10.
Bradey McDonnell scored a game-high 26 points for the Bulldogs (2-5, 5-6), who outscored WG, 23-11, in the final quarter.
Washington 74, Fort Cherry 31: Matt Popeck scored a game-high 21 points, which included five three-pointers, as Washington rolled to its seventh consecutive victory, 74-31, over visiting Fort Cherry in Section 3-AA.
The win improves Washington to 8-1 in the section and 10-5 overall. The Prexies remain a game behind first-place Bishop Canevin. Wash High plays a non-section game tonight at Section 4-AA leader Brownsville.
The Prexies took control early against Fort Cherry (0-8, 2-13), forging leads of 22-8 after one quarter and 45-21 at halftime. Popeck led four Wash High players in double figures. Nate Swart scored 13 points, and Markel Pulliam and Anthony Popeck each scored 10.
Rob McAnany led Fort Cherry with nine points.
Waynesburg 79, Bentworth 43: Darton McIntire and Mitch Warman combined for 43 points, matching Bentworth’s output, as the Raiders defeated the Bearcats 79-43 in Section 4-AA.
McIntire scored a game-high 26 points to lead Waynesburg (4-4, 7-7), which moved to the .500 mark. Warman followed with 17 points as the Raiders remained in third place in the section.
Steven Harner had a big game for Bentworth (0-7, 3-11), scoring a team-high 16 points.
Bethel Park 81, Peters Township 76: Bethel Park tightened the standings in Section 4-AAAA by winning 81-76 at Peters Township.
The PT loss leaves the Indians in a three-way tie for third place with Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon at 5-4 in the league. Bethel Park (4-5, 10-6) is a game behind the trio.
Bethel Park put four players in double figures led by Jake Dixon with 21 points. Levi Metheny was close behind with 20 points, Chance Wright had 18 and Brandon Thorson contributed 12.
The Black Hawks led 37-25 at halftime and had to fight off a second-half comeback by PT. The Indians still trailed by 12 points entering the fourth quarter and were able to close to within four late in the game but were unable to make it a one-possession game.
Nick Valentic led PT (5-4, 10-5) with 18 points. Ben Doyle and Clayton Yeates each scored 17 points, Michael Cortese had 14 and Kelson Marisa 10 to give the Indians five players in double figures.
Chartiers Valley 82, Canon-McMillan 63: Canon-McMillan couldn’t overcome a bad second quarter and Chartiers Valley’s 11 three-point field goals as the Big Macs lost 82-63 in a Section 4-AAAA game on the Colts’ home court.
After the first quarter ended in a 10-10 stalemate, Chartiers Valley (8-1, 12-3) outscored Canon-McMillan 21-2 in the second quarter for a 31-12 lead at intermission.
Ross Wilkerson’s 21 points and Coleman Vaughn’s 20 led CV, which had four players score in double figures.
Canon-McMillan’s Carson Miller had a big game, scoring a team-high 20 points. R. J. Bell followed with 11 points. The Big Macs fell to 1-8, 6-10.
Geibel 73, Mapletown 30: Four players scored in double figures to propel Geibel to a 73-30 victory over Mapletown in a Section 3-A game.
Dawson McIntyre and Robert Guo each scored 12 for the Gators (2-6, 3-10), who snapped an eight-game losing streak. Bailey Miller added 11 and Kyle Toth 10.
Alix Gennette led the Maples (0-8, 0-15) with nine points. Austin Herpak scored eight.
Monessen 96, Jefferson-Morgan 35: Jaden Altomore and Lavalle Rush each had a double-double to power Monessen to a 96-35 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 3-A game.
Altomore had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Rush had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Greyhounds (7-0, 12-3). Justice Rice had 17 points and eight assists.
D.L. Garrett led the Rockets (2-6, 3-13) with 10 points.
Brownsville 70, Carmichaels 35: Noah Brown scored a game-high 20 points to pace Brownsville to a 70-35 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 4-AA game.
James Holcomb had 16 points and Shandon Marshall 11 for the Falcons (8-0, 12-3).
Alex Hoy scored 12 points for the Mikes (2-5, 8-7).
California 64, Avella 38: Kass Taylor had a double-double – his fourth in as many games — with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead California to its 10th victory of the season, 64-38 over visiting Avella in Section 3-A.
Jaycee Conaway followed with 12 points for Cal, which improved to 7-1 in the section and 10-4 overall.
Avella (4-3, 6-10) received 13 points from Steven Miller and 10 from Austin Lis.
Seton-La Salle 53, Chartiers-Houston 50: Bill O’Malley scored 12 points to help Seton-La Salle to a 53-50 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 3-AA game.
Seton-La Salle (6-3, 7-9) outscored the Bucs, 32-20, in the second half.
Cam Hanley led the Bucs (2-6, 8-7) with 17 points and AJ Myers added 13.
Montour 72, McGuffey 45:
Ron Stevenson poured in 16 points to send Montour to a 72-45 win over McGuffey in a Section 3-AA game.
Caleb Bryan added 10 points for the Spartans (4-3, 8-5), who outscored McGuffey 42-25 over the middle two quarters.
Shaun Sanders scored 11 points and Colin Chapman 10 for the Highlanders (0-8, 5-11).
Girls result
Brentwood 46, Chartiers-Houston 34: Some early foul trouble and a bad second quarter were too much for Chartiers-Houston to overcome as the Bucs lost at Brentwood 46-34 in Section 3-AA.
C-H (5-3, 2-4) trailed by one points after the initial eight minutes, then was outscored 15-6 in the second quarter. The Bucs couldn’t generate enough offense to fuel a comeback and were hurt by making only six of 17 free throws.
Brentwood (4-3, 10-5) was led by Stephanie Thomasd with 13 points. Alecia Folino and Molly Huffman each had 11 points.
Char-Houston was led by Jala Walker’s 13 points. Jules Vulcano had 11.
