PT knocks off USC to claim first place
Peters Township got a good start and a strong finish to rack up a 42-24 victory over Upper St. Clair and win the subsection 2-B in Class AAA on a snowy Wednesday night.
The victory allows the Indians to host next week’s Section 2 tournament.
“It was a total team effort,” said Peters Township head coach Jason Carpetta. “The kids did what they needed to do. Each individual did their part. This is important. To host next week for a section title is nice, especially when you don’t have to travel.”
Peters Township won nine of the 14 bouts and got pins from Jordan Marosz at 106 and Luke Mary at 170.
“We just needed to get the matchups we wanted,” said Carpetta. “We got the flip and got the kids on who we wanted to.”
A.J. Buckiso got Peters Township off to a good start with a 6-5 overtime decision agianst John Wertz.
“We started at 152 and A.J. Buckiso … got a big win for the first match of the night,” Carpetta said. “It set the tone for the night.”
Jeff Merkart got a decision at 160, Mary got a pin at 170 and Alec Belack and Mike McAleavey notched decisions.
“We had a good following but the snow kept some people away,” Carpetta said. “It had some effect.”
