Down goes Frazier as Beth-Center pulls off upset
Sophomore guard Mary Gustovich scored 17 of her career-high 22 points in the second half Thursday night as Beth-Center stunned Frazier, 53-44, knocking the Commodores down to third place in the Section 4-AA girls basketball standings.
Beth-Center (3-5, 5-8), which kept its own playoff hopes alive with the win, led 21-18 at the half, but Gustovich and Kinlee Whited, who had 14 points, helped the Bulldogs outscore the Commodores (6-2, 9-6) 32-26 in the second half.
Jovanna Isaac had 18 points and Brook Polan 10 for Frazier.
Charleroi 67, Waynesburg 47: Maria Claybaugh led three Charleroi players in double figures with 21 points and the Cougars moved into a first-place tie in Section 4-AA with a 67-47 victory over visiting Waynesburg.
Charleroi (7-1) is in a tie for first place with Washington. Frazier fell a game behind the Cougars and Prexies after being upset by Beth-Center. Charleroi led Waynesburg 27-18 at halftime and pulled away by outscoring the Raiders 21-9 in the third quarter.
Kaitlyn Riley scored 16 points for Charleroi and Aislyn Lee contributed 11.
Much of Waynesburg’s scoring was done from long range by Kirsten Garber and Celine Monica. Garber scored a game-high 23 points and Monica had 15. They combined to make eight three-pointers.
The loss dropped Waynesburg (4-5, 6-9) to below .500 in section play.
Mt. Lebanon 60, Peters Township 50: Myra Wallace had 25 points as Mt. Lebanon scored a key Section 4-AAAA win over Peters Township, 60-50.
Kate Sramec chipped in 11 points for the Blue Devils (7-3, 9-7), who knocked the Indians (7-3, 14-3) out of first place with the win.
Madison Kerr had 14 points, Alyssa Konopka 12 and Makenna Marisa 11 for the Indians.
Canon-McMillan 66, Moon 33: Cheyenne Trest scored 18 points and Canon-McMillan sprinted out to a 36-12 halftime lead en route to a 66-33 Section 4-AAAA win over Moon.
Tamara Mathis and Kierra King added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Big Macs (8-2, 11-5), who remained in first place in the section.
Annie Bal had 11 points for Moon (0-10, 3-13).
Brownsville 49, Ringgold 34: Maris Seto scored a game-high 18 points and Brownsville used a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter and a big advantage at the free-throw line to defeat visiting Ringgold 49-34 in a key Section 4-AAA game.
Brownsville wins moves the Falcons (7-2, 16-2) into a second-0place tie with Ringgold (7-2, 10-6).
Brownsville led for most of the game but Ringgold pulled to within 37-34 in the fourth quarter. That, however, would be all for the Ringgold offense as Brownsville scored the game’s final 12 points.
Alie Seto scored 14 points for Brownsville and Lyric Mosley had 13. The Falcons made 17 free throws compared to only three for Ringgold.
Ashley Briscoe, with 13 points, was the only Ringgold player to score in double figures.
Bentworth 39, Carmichaels 34: Heather Chester scored a game-high 23 points to lead Bentworth to a 39-34 win over Carmichaels in a Section 4-AA game at home.
The Bearcats (1-8, 3-13) snapped a 12-game losing streak and pulled away with a 23-point second half. Chester made 11 of 20 free throws. Kristina Aeschbacher had 18 points for the Mikes (1-7, 4-13).
California 56, Mapletown 21: Grace Roberts had 30 points, hitting seven three-pointers, as California defeated Mapletown, 56-21, in a Section 3-A game.
Jenna Miller added 11 points for the Trojans (9-1, 11-6), who clinched a playoff spot with the victory.
Kayla Smith had 12 rebounds for Mapletown (2-8, 3-13).
Fort Cherry 43, Avella 35: Shannon Relihan scored 17 points as Fort Cherry moved into a tie for fourth place in the Section 3-A standings with a 43-35 win over the Eagles.
The Rangers (4-6, 5-11) led 34-23 entering the fourth quarter.
Grace Lengauer led Avella (4-6, 6-9) with 12 points.
Belle Vernon 73, McGuffey 42: Ashley Russell had 16 points and Belle Vernon outscored McGuffey 44-24 in the first half en route to a 73-42 non-section win.
Kelsey Green chipped in 13 points and Kiera Boff had 11 for Belle Vernon (6-12).
Katie Demi scored 20 points for McGuffey (1-15).
Seton-La Salle 82, Burgettstown 30: Madelena Psillidis had 17 points to lead five scorers in double digits as Seton-La Salle downed Burgettstown, 82-30, in a Section 3-AA game.
Alyana Ziegler and Mia Marzina had 13 points each for SL (6-1, 8-6).
Katie Tarr had 15 points for Burgettstown (2-7, 9-8).
Jefferson-Morgan 60, Geibel Catholic 31: Kayla Yorko had 18 points on six three-pointers as Jefferson-Morgan remained unbeaten in Section 3-A with a 60-31 win over Geibel Catholic.
Nikki Venick and Erin Confortini had 11 points each as well for the Rockets (10-0, 15-1).
Grace Nowicki scored 14 points and Lillian Yourish had 11 for Geibel (3-7, 5-11).
